A surprisingly good game
I wasn't sure what to think of this when my 9 year old daughter picked this out for a birthday present. After setting it up, reading the simple directions, and playing a few games of it, I'm pleasantly surprised and I'm hooked on it! The object is to move your "mirrors" one at a time to cause your laser cannon to reflect of your mirrors and onto your opponents "tower." The first one to hit the opponents tower with their laser is the winner -- as evidenced by the flashing lights and explosion sound. The kids REALLY get a big kick out of this.
Although the rules say you can only make one move or adjustment to your mirrors at a time and only test fire your laser once after each move, my kids are flexible on the rule. They will make several adjustments per move which makes the game faster and keeps them from getting frustrated. My 9 and 10 year old play this with each other but it is a little too difficult for my 5 and 7 year olds.
Be careful of the lasers though, they are real low-level lasers and should never be pointed at anyone's eyes. So if your kids aren't responsible enough to handle that, I'd stay away. Otherwise, give it a try and I think you'll like it too!
a good alternative to khet and a great gift idea
i was just fascinated with the fact that this game is based on the physics of reflection and so i bought it as a geek toy. the first day we got it home, my wife and i got hooked onto it. yes, it not just a game for 12 year old, you can get rather creative and make it for all ages. try creating your own board arrangement and starting positions to create complex games.
i would mainly compare this game to "khet". this is cheaper (20 bucks at walmart, 25 at target, 30 at toyrus, look for the latest deal on amazon) while khet sells for 40+. khet has better quality laser and mirrors, but this game provides the flexibility of the board and position of the gun. also there is possibility of more than 2 players playing. also there is no limit on the distance a mirror can move in a turn (this could be good or bad), but khet limits it to moving only by one box.
the only thing that bothered me was that the sensors on the target are quite sensitive and would make unnecessary noise even when you move your hand around it. its easy to ignore this for the fun part of this game. go ahead and buy it for yourself or as a gift for loved young ones!!!
Lots of fun
My twelve year old and I have alot of fun with this game. Lots of different options that call for different strategies. Could seem intimidating when you first try but no problems after the first five minutes of play. Overhead light in my kitchen did seem to set off the laser some, but was remedied by dimming the light.
