| Zen Master Obaku (d. 850) was known to scold his monks for studying the teachings of the old masters because he recognized that it is better to learn how to brew your own understanding than rely on the scraps of others (Case 11 of the "Blue Cliff Records"). Yet, in Zen training it is also said that "If you wish to move in the One Way do not dislike even the world of senses and ideas. Indeed, to accept them fully is identical with true Enlightenment," Sosan Ganchi Zenji (d. 606). On the one hand, no one can "give" us understanding, this we must find for ourselves; on the other hand, how wonderful that we don't have to keep reinventing the wheel. With these thoughts we offer the following selections. | ||
