Strange Brew
I absolutely love this CD, but I have a hard time describing it. Some of the music is distinctly bellydance, with the drums and rhythms. If you know traditonal arrangements, you'd catch this in some of the tracks. I believe bellydancer Rachel Brice is one of the dancers on the cover, and if you're familiar with her dance/dress style, this somehow makes sense, though the music is more upbeat than some of the stuff I've seen her dance to, but it fits the style of American Bellydance fused with Folk/Gypsy/Eastern European style.
The accordions and horns give it a Balkan/Eastern European feel, some Gypsy flourishes throughout. It sounds like something far away, not as much literally but metaphorically. A soundtrack involving a carnival, acrobats, bellydancers, corseted ladies and tophatted men set perhaps in Victorian England, flashes of maroon, absinthe green, indigo blue, gaslights, ostrich feathers and beads and bangles and a touch of moulin rouge and gothic without the electronica. Virtually all of it is instrumental, gleaned from a variety of artists, save one track, "Opa Cupa," an upbeat dancehall/folk music tune. The jewel case asks what would you play if you had Edward Gorey, Little Egypt, Queen Victoria and others to tea? This would be perfect.
Some thing in the way she moves me...
The first time I listened to this CD I was not sure how much I would like it. But after listening to it several times I began to appreciate it more and then really like it. My favorite track now is "Opa Cupa" which is a festive song of Balkan extraction. This is a quality CD and I like all the tracks.
Great music
Personally I love this CD. However, I can understand how a lot of people may not be 100% happy with it. I gave only 4 stars because I know most people would have a hard time calling this belly dance music and a lot of the music here would take some getting used to for a lot of folks. Most is very artsy and carnival/circus like in nature, which I LOVE. It's great to just pop in and listen to while driving even. It's definitely a lot of fun. There are a few "traditional" type tracks as well, but if you're looking for strictly typical belly dance music, this is not the buy for you. If you're conflicted about the purchase, watch some of the Indigo videos. Very vaudeville/burlesque feel. Me, myself and I would give a 5+ on this one.
