33 Reasons to purchase Leisure Horror Paperbacks
By an Amazon.com customer
Far Dark FieldsFar Dark Fields by Gary A. Braunbeck
Buy new: $5.83 / Used from: $2.27
Mr. Braunbeck is a frightening talent. I've seen two of his books through Leisure "Keepers" and "In Silent Graves" but he has some incredible books in the Limited market. I'd love to see "Prodigal Blues" from Cemetery Dance find its way to paperback. "Far Dark Fields" will be the authors next gem fall 2009.
The Wind CallerThe Wind Caller by P. D. Cacek
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
The first book of hers I've seen from Leisure (with hopefully more to come). I'm a bigger fan of her short fiction (Eros Interruptus & Leavings). Perhaps these two collections (or a new one) could be seen in the future?
This Rage of EchoesThis Rage of Echoes by Simon Clark
Buy new: $3.70 / Used from: $0.01
There have been a number of novels from Leisure by Mr. Clark. Check out "Vampyrrhic" and "Stranger" for two fine examples. Like with Ms. Cacek, I would love to see his hard to find story collections see print.
The AttractionThe Attraction by Douglas Clegg
Buy used from: $0.01
Nearly every one of Mr. Clegg's novels have seen print through Leisure so there is a wide library to choose from. Personal favorites are "The Hour Before Dark" and "Naomi". An outstanding storyteller.
The Shore (Leisure Fiction)The Shore (Leisure Fiction) by Robert Dunbar
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.14
"The Shore" is a sequel to Dunbar's "The Pines", which Leisure just re-released in paperback, this time uncut as the author intended.
SacrificeSacrifice by John Everson
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.00
Covenant won the Stoker for Best First Novel but was published in a limited edition so few were able to read it. Mr. Everson is an excellent edition to the Leisure stable of horror authors. Here is the sequel to Covenant, "Sacrifice". His next book, "The 13th" is due in November.
Bestial (Leisure Fiction)Bestial (Leisure Fiction) by Ray Garton
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.89
I've been a fan of Ray Gartons fiction since the late 1980's. "Live Girls" was just made available again in the last year and you are missing out if you haven't read it yet. The sequel "Night Life" is also available as well as the novel "The Loveliest Dead".
RageRage by Steve Gerlach
Buy used from: $0.02
"Rage" is the only novel of Mr. Gerlachs from Leisure but you'll be hooked. Hopefully we'll see paperback editions of "Lake Mountain" and "Love Lies Dying" currently available from Bloodletting Press.
Mistress of the DarkMistress of the Dark by Sephera Giron
Buy used from: $0.01
I've only had the pleasure of reading Ms. Giron's "House of Pain" but was amazed at the intensity of her writing. I look forward to her other books from Leisure but would love to see a re-publication of "Eternal Sunset" which was nominated for a Stoker.
ShapeshifterShapeshifter by J. F. Gonzalez
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I loved "Survivor" and cannot wait to read "The Beloved" but there are other books of his out there and I hope Leisure picks those up as well. Be warned, Mr. Gonzalez pulls no punches. His books are intense.
Bedbugs (Leisure Horror)Bedbugs (Leisure Horror) by Rick Hautala
Buy used from: $0.01
It's been awile since I've seen a new Leisure edition of a Rick Hautala novel. "Bedbugs" was a great collection and "The Mountain King" is one of the better "Bigfoot" novels. I'd love to see re-issues of his older works, such as "Little Brothers".
Urban GothicUrban Gothic by Brian Keene
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.18
Since Leisure brought Mr. Keene to the mainstream market from the limited press field he has been a publishing dynamo, good for a minimum of two books a year (which is a readers dream). Look for the author's next instant classic "Urban Gothic" in fall 2009.
The Bone Factory (Leisure Fiction)The Bone Factory (Leisure Fiction) by Nate Kenyon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.00
Bloodstone was a fantastic debut novel from a promising new writer many might have missed when it was released in hardcover. His follow up novel, "The Reach", was highly anticipated.
CoverCover by Jack Ketchum
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.66
Mr. Ketchum was only available in the limited market for much too long. Now Leisure has brought "The Girl Next Door", "She Wakes", the classic "Off Season" and it's sequel "Offspring" to the masses (as well as others). Always brace yourself for a Ketchum novel. You've been warned.
Fires Rising (Leisure Fiction)Fires Rising (Leisure Fiction) by Michael Laimo
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I'm ashamed to admit I've had a few of Mr. Laimo's novels in my collection but just recently read "Atmosphere". Now I can't wait to read his other novels. I would love to see Leisure publish some of his collected short fiction.
FerocityFerocity by Stephen Laws
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I had seen a book or two from Mr. Laws from Leisure but, unfortunately, I never tried a book until "Fear Me". Now I'm having trouble locating those earlier paperbacks. I've nobody to blame but myself. Try not to make the same mistake.
FleshFlesh by Richard Laymon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.40
Richard Laymon was only available in limited markets and british editions before Leisure. This in itself was a crime. Now there is an impressive amount of titles by Laymon available, most notably the volumes in the Beast House series "The Cellar", "The Beast House", and "The Midnight Tour". The only thing to expect from a Laymon novel is the unexpected. His novel "Flesh" is due in the fall.
The EverlastingThe Everlasting by Tim Lebbon
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
Tim Lebbon was a staple of Leisure books long before I got the good sense to try one of his novels. His imagination is as fresh as it appears limitless. My personal favorites are "Fears Unnamed" which collects four of his shorter works and the novel "Face".
Water WitchWater Witch by Deborah Leblanc
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Deborah LeBlanc is a master at atmosphere. The expression "lost in a book" must have been coined with her novels in mind. Her characters feel like people I know and the locations breathe with life.
The Golem (Leisure Fiction)The Golem (Leisure Fiction) by Edward Lee
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.00
"Extreme" is a mild word when one is refering to Edward Lee. He will shock you, surprise you, and more than likely gross you out but he gets away with it. Its all part of the story he's telling and everyone loves a good story. Mr. Lee's next novel is due the end of the year.
Shadow DreamsShadow Dreams by Elizabeth Massie
Buy used from: $0.01
I haven't seen a Leisure book from Elizabeth Massie in quite a few years but hopefully that will change one day soon. If you can find a copy, I recommend "Wire Mesh Mothers" and "Sineater".
Death MaskDeath Mask by Graham Masterton
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.00
Mr. Masterton has an impressive number of books to his credit and his output doesn't seem to be slowing down. While many of his new books are being published through Leisure, it would be nice to see reprints of his earlier out of print novels.
Rabid GrowthRabid Growth by James A. Moore
Buy used from: $0.01
He's had some books released in paperback from other publishers but I was first introduced to his work through Leisure. An amazing writer whose paperbacks are becoming harder to find. I recommend anything by him.
The DeceasedThe Deceased by Tom Piccirilli
Buy used from: $0.01
I believe Mr. Piccirilli is primarily being released through another publisher but I may have never tried the author if it wasn't for the earlier releases through Leisure. Notable titles are "Hexes" and "The Deceased".
Tower HillTower Hill by Sarah Pinborough
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.00
I picked up "The Reckoning" at a used book store. Now I buy Ms. Pinborough's novels as soon as they are released. She is a new talent who writes like a veteran. I hope you enjoy her books as well. Look for "Feeding Ground" in late fall.
CrimsonCrimson by Gord Rollo
Buy new: $7.12 / Used from: $1.28
Gord Rollo has published several novels on the limited press market but Leisure will finally make the author's novels available for a wider audience. Hope you enjoy the ride.
Found You (Leisure Fiction)Found You (Leisure Fiction) by Mary SanGiovanni
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Miss Sangiovanni's first novel, The Hollower, proved to match the advanced buzz it received. Here's hoping her new book, a sequel, keeps the excitement going.
HalloweenlandHalloweenland by Al Sarrantonio
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.56
I was very pleased to see Mr. Sarrantonio's novels being published through Leisure. I was a fan of his novels when they were released through another publisher back in the 90's. It would be nice to see them re-released through Leisure.
Jake's WakeJake's Wake by John Skipp
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.53
Mr. Skipp has been a staple in the horror author line-up for quite some time. His collaborations with fellow author Craig Spector in the late 80's early 90's were some of the finest of the time. Mr. Skipp's solo work continues his go for the throat style.
DepravedDepraved by Bryan Smith
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.50
"House of Blood" made me take notice of this excellent new writer but "Deathbringer" made me a fan. Also enjoyed "Freakshow". Look for his next book, "Depraved", late this year.
Pressure (Leisure Fiction)Pressure (Leisure Fiction) by Jeff Strand
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.00
NEW TO LIST! It is fantastic to see Mr. Strand join the leisure stable of authors. It's almost hard for me to categorize Mr. strand as horror because his books are incredibly funny. Then, right in the middle of a laugh, he can grab you by the throat. There needs to be mass market editions of the "Andrew Mayhem" novels.
The NightwalkerThe Nightwalker by Thomas Tessier
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.24
NEW TO LIST! I initially didn't have Thomas Tessier on this list because the only thing I've seen from Leisure is reprints of his older books. I've read a great deal of Mr. tessier's books but this was back in the late 1980's. Now I see Leisure is putting out a book called "Wicked Things" which is hopefully a release from the long absent writer.
Darkness WakesDarkness Wakes by Tim Waggoner
Buy used from: $0.01
Another writer with an amazing imagination. I read some of Mr. Waggoner's short fiction in various magazines and was eager to try a novel. I definitely was not disappointed. Highly recommend "Pandora Drive".
