Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2–Emily, an ostrich, and Albert, an elephant, have a solid friendship that is evident in the activities they share as well as in their joyful cartoon smiles. Each of the five chapters is a self-contained story. In all of them, Emily pursues her own ideas and Albert appreciates her love and attention. When he wants to dance a great variety of dances, she insists on ballet. When Emily decides he is ill, he allows her to take care of him and then goes on a bike ride. When Albert tries to read a good book, Emily pesters him until she decides to listen to him read aloud. The resolution to each episode is pleasant and complete. The characters are lovable, loyal, and lively. The cartoon drawings add just the right amount of enthusiasm and personality. Children will relate to the feelings of both Emily and Albert and enjoy their interactions.–Erlene Bishop Killeen, Fox Prairie Elementary School, Stoughton, WI

From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 1. In the tradition of Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad series and other picture-book stories of animal friends, the five simple chapters in this small, square book show the bond between Emily the ostrich and Albert the elephant, so different from one another yet such good friends. Whether depicting the animals comparing noses, healing hiccups, dancing the mamba, or sharing a good book, Slonim's wild ink-and-watercolor pictures capture the farce, the conflict, and the caring. Albert is always the wise, indulgent, tolerant one, letting the whining ostrich get away with things. At times he's more parent than friend, but children will still recognize themselves in the daily dramas. In one of the best episodes, Emily resents Albert's being curled up with a good book ("I don't think it can be a good book if it makes others feel lonely while you are reading it"), so he lets her snuggle up next to him with a peanut-butter sandwich to share the story. Review
"Offering five brief slice-of-life chapters about two idiosyncratic animal friends, Ormerod s (illustrator of Robie H. Harris s I Am NOT Going to School Today!) and Slonim s (Oh, Ducky!) picture book shares the pacing, subject matter and format of James Marshall's brilliant George and Martha books..." -Publishers Weekly
