Customer Reviews

I have Nick Magnus to thank for introducing me to this CD5
Nick (keyboardist for the Enid and Steve Hackett) produced much of this remarkable CD. How did I miss Duncan Browne when he was still with us!? I do, however, remember hearing some of Duncan's music over the years. This CD is first-rate (I share Janis's comments from above). The variety of styles and musicianship are wonderful. It is a huge loss that Duncan is no longer with us. In some respects his work is similar to (and a combination of) the works of Anthony Phillips and Andy Pratt. Great guitar, keyboards, melodies, harmonies, lyrics and everything else. This CD is well worth the price.

My all-time favorite!5
I first heard Duncan Browne when they released the first Metro CD. I absolutely loved Metro. Together with Peter Godwin and Sean Lyons they created some very inspiring Bowie-ish progressive, new-wave styled rock. Excellent and ahead of it's time. When Duncan left Metro
in the late 70s he started his solo career writing and playing progressive guitar rock laced with a Bryan Ferry type approach. Ducan was a great guitar player. This CD, although sadly his last work, was elegant and excellent. (Where are the old Metro albums on CD?)

A Fitting Elegy for the Genius That Was Duncan Browne5
Duncan Browne had a sultry voice and a heady sexuality that, sadly, was not heard by nearly enough people during his lifetime. A master of the twelve-string guitar, he also excelled as an electric guitarist. He incorporated classical delicacy with a pulsating bassline and an understated breathy voice that never failed to be compelling. Prior to his death, Browne composed music for films and tv. Many of the wonderful instrumentals heard on British television have been included on this disc. From the opener "Scull Twins" (which I still believe would have been a hit if Madonna had covered it), to personal favorites "Love Leads You" and "I Fall Again" this is a winner. Sadly, Duncan Browne died before the completion of "Songs Of Love And War". Happily, he leaves a catalog of magical work with which we can celebrate his life. The tracks were lovingly finished and released after Duncan's untimely death. Thanks to one of the most magnificent pop vocalists of all time, Colin Blunstone, former lead singer of The Zombies, and Browne's backup band this is the most commercial and viable music Browne ever created. It is Blunstone and former Browne's former bandmakes that makes the music on this cd sing. A special bonus is the inclusion of the cult classic "The Wild Places" not available since 1979. It is a new millenium, a perfect time to discover or rediscover Duncan Browne. "Songs Of Love and War" is a glistening jewel in the crown on what was an all too short career. Hopefully the posthumus success of Nick Drake, ironically best known for "Pink Moon" in the Volkswagen commercial, will inspire radio stations to dig into the vaults and pull out the music of Duncan Browne. Next year will Infinity or Mercedes will be selling cars to the mystical incantations of Browne singing: "Take me to the wild places and let me show you what the night is for. I don't want to dream I want to set the wheels in motion..."?
