PREFACE

This book is a complete guide to IBM's relational database server, known as DB2 Universal Database Version 7.1 for OS/390 and z/OS. In order to understand the DB2 family and all of the options you have for implementation, you need to be familiar with the fundamentals of all platforms. This book covers DB2 UDB for OS/390 and z/OS; for details on the other platforms, you will need to refer to the other certification guides. Perhaps you are planning to become certified, or you would simply like to understand the powerful new DB2 UDB database servers from IBM and the capabilities of DB2 for OS/390 and z/OS. Those interested in becoming an IBM Certified Professional will want to review the sample questions at the end of this book.

The book is divided into four parts: Part 1—Introduction to DB2 UDB for OS/390 and z/OS (Chapters 1-3). The family of DB2 products, the DB2 environment, and access controls are covered in Chapters 1, 2, and 3. Part 2—Using SQL (Chapters 4-6). The Structured Query Language (SQL) and database objects are -discussed in Chapters 4, 5, and 6. Part 3—DB2 UDB Database Administration for OS/390 and z/OS (Chapters 7-10). DB2 UDB for OS/390 and z/OS common administration tasks and recovery issues are discussed in Chapters 7 and 8. Chapter 9 covers the architecture and implementation of data sharing in a parallel sysplex environment. Database monitoring and performance considerations are discussed in Chapter 10.Part 4—Developing Applications with DB2 (Chapters 11-14). An introduction to application development for DBAs is given in Chapter 11. Chapter 12 deals with some of the additional considerations for application development. Many of the advanced functions and object relational extensions are covered in Chapter 13. Chapter 14 covers issues surrounding locking and concurrency.

This book can be used as a self-study guide to help you prepare for the DB2 Universal Database V7.1 for OS/390 and z/OS certification exam or simply as a guide to DB2 Universal Database V7.1 for OS/390 and z/OS. For information about the DB2 UDB Family, refer to the other certification books.

This is not enough to pass the exam.......3
I have taken this exam 516 twice and each time I failed to clear the exam by 1-2 marks. First time I scored 59% and next time 61%, the pass mark is 63%. I must say that I was so close by reading this book alone, but I strongly feel that it is not very comprehensive for clearing the exam.

However, I am preparing again , and this time I am reading most from the on-line IBM manuals, which are very good. The book does not cover some of the topics such as application development, DSN commands, Security etc, in depth , which make quite a substantial portion of exam.

Unfortunatley neither the questions in the book nor in the sample exams at IBM's site give you a real feel, what they are going to ask! Further, I feel that the book as a "Certification Guide" is nowhere near to the actual exam. It does not give a feel as what % of questions will be expected from each chapter or some kind of distribution. Sample questions should be after each chapter for better preparation.

In spite of all these shortcomings, I must confess that this book was very good to cover most of the topics but one has to read the manuals in order to really pass the exam.

As the title says : It is just a guide !4
It gives you a whole vision of DB2 V7 for OS/390 and Z/OS but it doesn't go into details (Of course none books can do it ) Use it at a reference book , and when needing more details take the IBM manuals (Just to add that text of this book often come from the IBM manuals parts) !
If you passed the 69 tests questions provided in the book for 516 the exam, you can then enroll for the test , because it is quite the same level. The sample tests give you the idea of the questions.

DB2 UDB V7.1 for OS/390 Certification Guide3
I would not classify this text as a true "Certification Guide" for DB2 for OS/390, but it has much more than some other books that I have read. I was expecting a bit more depth from the authors, who have a high reputation in the DB2 world. It gives a great overview of the subject, but failed to delve into some of the areas that a "Certification Guide" should have. I would hope the authors would write a true "Guide" to provide a complete background for DB2 DBAs and those who wish to train to become one.
