1960's Delbert4
This is a great way to get back to Delbert's roots. Although this is a 2009 release, these are mostly from sessions done in the 60's so don't get this expecting new music. His picture on the cover is a clue that these are old recordings. For historical purposes, you should get this to complete a collection and to follow his evolution to the great artist that he is today. The liner notes provide good historical info as well. When importing this cd into itunes, it thinks that the title is "The Crazy Cajun Recordings" so I'm not sure what that's all about. If you want a musical flash back, check this disc out.

A Great Delbert Collection5
After reading some of the other reviews I felt compelled to review myself. This album is a bit different, but I feel that's what makes it great! Delbert singing "Twist & Shout/La Bamba"..."These Boots Are Made For Walking"..."Mr. Pitiful"..."This Boy"...I love it! Sure, Delbert's voice sounds a little different - it was 30+ years ago - my voice certainly sounds different from 30 years ago too! We all have our different tastes, but I simply love this collection. It's a great summertime listen too - it fit in perfectly at my barbecue this past weekend!

Terribly Dated Pre 1970s Dreck1
Delbert McClinton is a terrific talent and singer of Texas Roadhouse blues. I am interested in anything he does. This record is a collection of his earliest recordings, all pre 1970. It was after this period that he became the great talent he is today. Do these recordings shed light on his roots? Somewhat. These are C+ covers of popular songs, some soul, some pop, including the Beatles "This Boy" and Otis Redding's "Mr. Pitiful". The arrangements and production are very dated, while the sound quality is good. At times, it barely even sounds like Delbert. None of the songs are particularly interesting or even worth a second listen. I wonder if Delbert had any say or control about this disc coming out. There is a lot of much better material elsewhere than here. This record is for completists only.
