Do Not Buy Updated:( February 4, 2009)1
Please do not buy this computer. I had this computer for two months and the screen is cracked internally. Dell said that I caused the damage and I would have to pay $400 to fix it. I work in social services and I don't have that kind of money. $400 is my rent for the month. I am now using my old Toshiba laptop that I have had for almost 6 years without any issues. I never taken it off my desk it has never dropped. This model in particular has the problem of internally cracked screens, just do some online searches and you will see this problem come up constantly. Stay away from this product.

Update: February 4, 2009
I have not changed my mind about this product. If I could I would give it one star. My laptop no longer plays any DVDs or CDs; it doesn't recognize the drive. It's probably a motherboard issue. And the battery no longer holds a charge. Also I had to get a new AC adaptor because it wasn't working either. I recommend that you buy something more reliable. I know I'll be buying a Toshiba for a new functioning laptop. As for a desktop computer, Dell has given me the confidence to build my own because I purchased a screen for $150 and installed it myself since it wasn't covered under the warranty. I think putting together a computer won't be too hard. Thank you, Dell.

So please don't risk getting a haphazardly made laptop from Dell. Go buy a Toshiba, Sony, or if you want this is a good time to buy an Apple.
Again BUYER BEWARE.

not bad, but it has the worst touchpad I've ever fought with2
In general, the machine has worked pretty well. I haven't had the problems with reliability some others have reported. Having to use Vista is a pain, of course -- I truly wish this had come with XP. I may get a new hard drive and try running with Ubuntu instead.

But the real deal killer (and why I wouldn't recommend this computer to anyone) is that the touchpad appears to be designed with the express purpose of driving the user insane. Imagine browsing around, say, at the Amazon site, or at some news page. You go to drag down the bar at the right to adjust the page on the screen. The screen starts shifting... then stops. Suddenly the touchpad cursor is frozen and won't move. But it isn't broken, it just pauses for an infuriating several seconds, then starts moving again. This is aggravating in the extreme. At first I thought it was a hardware problem or maybe dirt on the pad? But no, the pad is clean, and I checked on another Inspiron 1525 at a retail store and the mousepad on that does the same inane trick. I really can't imagine how Dell could believe that kind of behavior in a mouse or touchpad could be considered acceptable. Like I'd be ok with paying extra for a computer with a fast processor but wouldn't mind the touchpad taking coffee breaks on me??

Stay far, far away from any DELL products!!1
The first year is covered under warranty. They happily replace anything that breaks. My DVD/CD player and powercord broke in the first year. No problem getting replacement. Then the next year comes....and the power cord and DVD/CD player breakdown again. I pay my $200 to replace it. 6 months later, the same product breaks down again. I receive the DVD/CD player and it doesn't work. And, the technical agent refuses to provide any assistance unless I fork out another $45. When I spoke to the manager, she told me to prove that I have bought so many DVD/CD players, and if I can then they would help me for free. So, I broke out all my receipts, and told her every order number. Then, she refused to help me, and said I must pay $45. They are just awful. Their product stinks and the customer service stinks. Go with any other brand than Dell. This computer completely falls apart after 6 months.
