Maria Hernandez is a poor but beautiful 15-year-old girl who must scavenge food to keep herself and her elderly godmother alive. When her godmother dies she becomes the ward of Don Fernando de la Vega. Unfortunately for Maria her presence is greatly resented by Victoria de la Vega and her niece Soraya Montenegro. Insane with grief Maria gives up their child for adoption. Though Luis Fernando returns and they adopt a child together she never loses hope of finding her lost son.
