Product Description

Living with type 1 diabetes requires intensive, nonstop daily management, week after week, year after year. This means that young people with type 1 and their parents have to become experts on their own condition—even better informed than the average doctor—and able to self-manage its daily demands. The Type 1 Diabetes Book is the most authoritative book ever published on the condition and will become the one book that every young person with type 1 diabetes will need to own. "In this book," writes author Dr. Ragnar Hanas, "I speak directly, all the time, to you, the person with diabetes. The topics covered range from how your body works to sweets, treats, and ice cream; from insulin injection technique to long-term complications; and any number of subjects in between. With this book at your side, you can easily and quickly get to know about diabetes and how to handle it with confidence in all the different situations that life has to offer." With 40 chapters, 430 graphs and illustrations, 168 medical terms explained, and 813 references to articles and journals, no other book available on this subject comes remotely close to the quality or amount of comprehensive information offered here.

Editorial Reviews

Review
It is an incredible book, which deals in depth with every detail of diabetes care in young people. -- Dr Charles Fox, Consultant Physician at Northampton General Hospital, UK

From the Author
I have worked with children and adolescents with diabetes up to the age of 25 for more than 15 years now and I have learned a lot from them through the years. I have collected all my experience in this book and my aim has been to publish a book that is equally readable by persons/parents with diabetes and professionals. When we have the same source of knowledge we can easily share each others thoughts and ideas. I have found it essential that there is scientific evidence behind recommendations and guidelines. Therefore the book contains more than 400 references for further reading. Although I am a pediatrician I have adapted the text to address also the issues of adults with type 1 diabetes.

Sometimes in this book I speak directly to you, the person with diabetes, and sometimes I address your family or parents. At other times there is even information for third parties, like the diabetes team members. When you are reading this book, just imagine that we are all together, sitting around a table, discussing diabetes. Remember that you run your own life - don't let your diabetes take over! Instead you can learn how to handle your diabetes in the different situations that life has to offer.

Dr Stuart Brink, Senior Endocrinologist at NEDEC5
Dr Hanas' diabetes instructional manual is well written, easy to read and understand. The book is filled with humor and common-sense advice which is practical, positive and upbeat! Dr Hanas includes the latest medical as well as psychosocial concepts gleaned from years of experience providing care to infants, toddlers, children, adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus aiming for the best glucose control possible. His approach provides information that allows parents and kids to take charge of their own diabetes care and slowly but surely become their own experts. Highly recommended :>

Excellent resource for ID adults too5
When someone is first diagnosed with diabetes, it can be an overwhelming experience. There is so much information on the market, and much of it can be quite unnerving especially if the diabetes book emphasizes possible complications from the disease. Dr. Hanas' book is very light-hearted and upbeat, and emphasizes, rather, the means to manage the disease. Inherent in diabetes is the requirement that the patient manage his or her own diabetes on a daily basis---being his or her own doctor in a sense. This book provides the tools and tips to understand and manage the disease. A wealth of information, and an excellent resource.

A book by a doctor who TRULY cares !!5
When you open this book you will immediately feel the dedication Dr. Hanas has for persons living with diabetes. This book guides patients to live full, healthy, and productive lives, and fit the necessary diabetes care into their lifestyle. This book will empower you and make you feel good about your options.

I love that "Type 1 Diabetes: How to Become an Expert on Your Own Diabetes" is both comprehensive and extremely readable. There are some drawings from children included in the book that will make you stop and take a deep breath -- only a doctor who TRULY understands what life is like with diabetes, would include such drawings. The graphics keep the book lively and the charts and diagrams make complex concepts, understandable.

My son has had type 1 diabetes for 16 years and I've read many diabetes books in that time. This one is tops.
