In an age of reality TV, feature documentaries are almost mundane nowadays. However, this is a documentary for people who don’t like documentaries. Featuring four teenagers that each cover the spectrum of high school personalities: the popular princess, the jock, the artistic rebel, and the lonely geek. Available at Target stores. See my review for further details.
The Bank Job (Two-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)The Bank Job (Two-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $2.73
A superb plot loosely based on the true story of the infamous 1971 Baker Street bank robbery in London. Definitely one of the sleeper hits of the year! Good pacing, solid acting, a great story with a few twists and turns and an intriguing "what if?" backstory, this film entertains to the very end.
CloverfieldCloverfield
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $0.38
One of the best horror (and marketed) movies to grace the screen in recent years. Taking the concept of YouTube, the filmmakers used an interesting idea and made a remarkably fresh new take on the monster movie genre. This will definitely set a new precedent for monster movies, making it a new classic for generations to come. See my review for further details.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $10.91
The plot, originally penned by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is damn clever and, although it strays from the novella (and slightly resembles "Forrest Gump"), the movie is one of the epics of the year. The acting is excellent and even though the tale, dealing heavily with mortality, can be a bit sad, it still doesn’t detract from the wonderful plot and characters that inhabit this movie.
The Dark Knight (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Dark Knight (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $2.40
Maybe not THE BEST movie of the year, but definitely VERY close. Writer/Director Christopher Nolan and cast delivered a superb movie that is the best comic book adaptation ever! Heath Ledger rightly deserved his Golden Globe win and the Oscar for his portrayal as the psychopathic anarchist The Joker. See my review for further details.

This rom-com was panned by quite a few critics and given so-so reviews by the rest, but I extremely enjoyed the story and new, fresh approach to a genre that has otherwise become painfully predictable. Advertised as a "romantic whodunit" with the audience trying to guess who is the mother of Hayes’ daughter, Maya. The story moves very easily with likeable characters and funny situations.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Three-Disc Unrated Collector's Edition)Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Three-Disc Unrated Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $9.59
This film is loosely based on writer/actor Segel's real-life romance/break-up with Linda Cardellini; the story tells of a normal guy who is dumped by his girlfriend and his attempting to get over her by treating himself to a getaway only to find his ex inhabiting the same hotel with her new rockstar boyfriend. What’s best about this film is that it perfectly captures the guy’s POV to a breakup.
Frost/NixonFrost/Nixon
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.46
What I expected to be a slow-moving political movie, turned out to be a fascinating character-driven film focusing on two very different people TV interviewer David Frost and former U.S. president Richard M. Nixon. However, as the movie progresses we see that both men have everything to lose and gain from this one quintessential interview.
Gran Torino (Widescreen Edition)Gran Torino (Widescreen Edition)

Eastwood plays the tough, stubborn, bigoted Korean War vet Walt Kowalski, who has a family who doesn’t truly appreciate him and Hmong neighbors he doesn’t understand. This movie is the story of our connectivity to each other, the importance of helping others, & living a good life despite the obstacles that life throws in our way. A poetic piece of cinema that has the audience feeling quite moved.

Robert Downey Jr. has been fortunate enough to have great roles that truly test his ability as an actor, but, it took this comic book film to get the accolades he deserves. For a short time, this was probably the best comic book adaptation movie made ... but then came "The Dark Knight." Still, for all the camp that most Marvel comics offer up, in their comics and movies, this one is the best.

Forget "Twilight"! This is THE vampire love story to watch & one of the most realistic vampire movies I've seen. Oskar is an outcast, being bullied & dreaming of revenge. Then, Eli moves in next door & she turns out to be more than she seems. The two form a close relationship but don't think this is some fluff. This has a few gory moments throughout the film; the best is the final pool scene.
Mamma Mia! The Movie (Two Disc Special Edition)Mamma Mia! The Movie (Two Disc Special Edition)

Sure, it’s a definite chick flick musical! But that doesn’t stop it from being one of the best musical adaptations of the year. Anyone who says they don’t like at least one ABBA song doesn’t have much musical credence in my book. Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried are delightful. The movie has touching performances, great musical arrangements, and make-you-want-to-get-up-and-dance music sequences.
MilkMilk
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.25
I had seen the documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk" and it made this movie all the more entertaining; check it out if you get a chance. Josh Brolin uncannily looks and sounds like the real Dan White. "Milk" accomplishes to show a true portrayal of a man who was fighting for more than himself - a man fighting for generations to come.
Quantum of Solace (Two-Disc Special Edition)Quantum of Solace (Two-Disc Special Edition)

The newest James Bond does NOT disappoint, picking up right where Casino Royale left off. Most Bond fans have complained that the writers and producers are trying too hard to make Bond like Jason Bourne but I completely disagree. This is Bond on his journey to being Bond showing how he goes from his rough-around-the-edges beginning to the eventual smooth operator he is to become.
Revolutionary RoadRevolutionary Road

The book was SO great and the movie itself follows very closely to the book. This movie includes performances so spectacular; they are passionate and affecting, shaking the audience to its core. DiCaprio was robbed of an Oscar nom! The subject matter is depressing, not for the faint-of-heart, but is an exceptionally well-made movie all around.
Sex and the City - The Movie (Special Edition)Sex and the City - The Movie (Special Edition)

This film picks up about a year after the events of the series finale, finding Carrie and Mr. Big about to walk down the aisle when a certain someone starts getting cold feet. What’s next is a satisfying storyline for each of the four women. Overall, I was surprised the movie was so good and would recommend it to anyone looking for just an enjoyable, light movie.
Slumdog MillionaireSlumdog Millionaire
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.99
The storyline follows a poor boy who becomes a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" As he’s asked the questions, he remembers certain life-changing points in his life that help him to obtain the answer. Also, he is being questioned by police for supposedly cheating on the quiz show. Sound confusing? Don’t worry, it’s not. This film will win just about anybody over.
SpiralSpiral
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $0.70
This Hitchcockian thriller is something that M. Night Shyamalan should have cooked up; instead, we get it from comedian actor/director Joel David Moore. The movie deals with a rather depressing telemarketer who lives a very drab existence except for his art. Until one day, he meets a cute new co-worker and his life seems to go well. Of course this wouldn’t be a thriller without a creepy subplot.

This was definitely not a movie for kids, but more for the kid-at-heart adult. I won’t say this is the best Pixar film I’ve ever seen, but it resonates at the perfect time when we worry about global warming and the effects we have on our planet. It definitely could fly over kids’ heads but it’s still got plenty of zany wackiness that will keep kids interested.
Wanted (Two-Disc Special Edition)Wanted (Two-Disc Special Edition)

The well-done violent pick of the year definitely goes to this film! James McAvoy is Wesley Gibson, sick of his nonexistent life, being pushed around. All that changes when he discovers that his father was one of the best assassins in the world and he obtains the same unique ability. "Loosely" based on the comic, this movie switched from a league of supervillains to a league of assassins.
The WrestlerThe Wrestler

This was one of my absolute favorites of the year! I can’t rave enough about this film. Even the blocking was excellent! The main cast only consisted of three actors and each one’s performance was a powerhouse. But the best one here is Mickey Rourke. This is a great film with so much meaning and emotion, it's hard to resist investing in the very realistic characters.
