The Ideal Second Television
Is this one of the best flat-screen TVs out there? Of course not. Nor should it be at its price point. But you will not find a better quality to price ratio on the market, and for this reason I give the Olevia 227v five stars. It may not be outstanding in any one area, but it offers good to excellent performance across the board. A few things you should know:
I'd rate the picture quality as very good, in absolute terms, especially with HD content, and sound quality as good. Just don't expect a lot from the built-in speakers. Relative to the price of the set, the picture quality is excellent.
The set is black, not silver as pictured here. The "v" designation stands for vertically mounted speakers, which makes this a very wide set for a 27" screen. Be sure you have the 34" of width that it requires! An "h" designation in the Olevia line stands for horizontally mounted speakers, which are at the bottom of the set.
Keep in mind that Olevia's "Big Picture Technology," advertised to stretch a standard 4:3 picture to fill the 16:9 screen without distortion only works with ANALOG SIGNALS! Chances are that you'll be connecting to a digital cable box--you must if you intend to use the preferred HDMI interface--and the Olevia will not stretch a digital signal. You're stuck with a 4:3 image with thick black bars at the side, unless you zoom it which cuts off the top and bottom of the picture. Even on "HD" television channels, broadcasters often transmit 4:3 programs, and you will not be able to stretch those to fill the screen, either.
The Olevia product line is confusing--you'll also find a 327v, 427v, and 527v, and they all seem to have the same specs. What's the difference? The 3 series lacks tuners, which may save you some money, and you don't need them if you connect to a cable box. It's also the only Olevia series to use a PixelWorks graphics processor, which some feel is inferior to the ATI graphics used in the rest of the Olevia line. The 2, 4 and 5 series share identical innards -- the 4 series is simply silver, while the 5 series offers some additional picture adjustments.
All of the Olevia 27" sets offer the same inputs, which cover just about every connection out there--but there's only one of each type, so keep that in mind! Ideally, you want to use the HDMI connection to link to your cable box.
What are the negatives? There are many reports of Olevia sets needing repairs after a year or two of use (when they're out of warranty), so that's something to consider. And tech support, by most accounts, is pretty much non-existent, with no response to emails or phone calls. I sent an email to tech support three weeks ago and never received an answer. Fortunately, i found the info I was looking for online, but caveat emptor.
Decent quality and price
I bought this refurb. TV (227 S-11 model) because of good reviews and a low price about 7 months ago. I wanted one with a digital tuner, and after it has finally arrived, I was instantly pleased to being able to tune to HD stations with excellent quality on a simple antenna. I was also able to pick up many of the analog (non-HD)cable stations without the box through my cox internet service provider. The sound is better after having it adjusted. The cons, in my opinion, is that the image has a little ghosting problem. It's less visible on the VGA signal, and hardly visible on HD signals. There are also other minor problems
Unfortunately, I decided to put this TV on a shelf which was about 7-8 feet from floor without securing it very well. One day a terrible thing has happened...my new toy fell crashing down on the hard wood floor right in front of my eyes!
The front face completely came of with all the fasteners holding the screws completely torn out. Fortunately, nothing else was much damaged.
To my surprise, the TV still worked ok, after having it plugged in, however, it had one pixel damaged, which is hardly visible.
I was able to repair the case and the fasteners (about 15 pieces) by the use of epoxy glue, and now got my TV back functioning again!
Perhaps, this little story will serve as a little testament to the higher quality that Olevia has puts into their product.
I am still pleased with this TV.
What more can you ask for?
Good television< the one i originally purchased was refurbished, and quickly noticed some problems, however i contacted Olevia and they set up an exchange in no time. The one i received from them works great, and from what i can tell was new. I'm happy all around. I don't have HD broadcasting, so i use my HDTV mostly with my PS3, blu-ray movies included. and as far as picture and sound goes, its very good. especially for the price.
