self policing drive won't let you share most of your music/avi/movies1
this is a good example of a company which thinks it is doing what's best for it's customers by not allowing you to share your movies, music over the network.
Perhaps they are trying to go out of business. who knows.
yeah I have 1 TB of documents. NOT.

A great NAS drive for backups and media sharing5
This drive was incredibly easy to set up and is a breeze to use.

I'm using this on my home network which has several Macs and PCs.

I plugged it into my network and turned it on. It immediately was visitble on my network. I gave the drive a fixed IP and set up a user. I mounted the drive and ran my backup software. That was all there was to it.

I did not install the included software - it has something to do with sharing your files outside of your home network, something in which I am not interested.

I finally have a full backup of all my music, pictures, movies and data. In addition, I can pull off the movies and pictures to any device in my home - great for watching movies on other machines / media devices.

Some posters have commented that the drive does not let you share certain file types. That simply is not true. This drive sits on my network and acts like any attached storage device. Perhaps these users are trying to share their media files outside their home network with the included software - I suspect that is where they are running into problems. There are many better and more secure ways to share your files, and those do not limit what file types you can share. I would recommend not installing the included software.

All in all, I've been very pleased with this drive.

Why would anyone buy a drive that limits what you can access off it ? 1
That this drive is self-policing is insane. What sort of marketing blunder is this? As a local drive this drive is very usable, but the moment you try to run it as a file server, forget it.

Western Digital MyBooks, in general, are very nice products. Just not this one, or their NAS product. You can do much better if you are looking for a NAS.
