Susan Williams-Ellis created the Botanic Garden pattern over 30 years ago when she stumbled upon 19th-century illustrated herbal and botany guidebooks. A distinctive leafy vine circles around the perimeters of all plates, bowls, glasses, and placemats. On each set piece, a spray of graceful flowers sprout as a couple butterflies and the occasional dragonfly hover nearby. The varied flower motifs include daisy, pansy, sweet pea, speedwell, rhododendron, and forget-me-not blossoms. With its timeless beauty, this quaint set makes a fabulous gift to newlyweds beginning their life together.

Crafted in durable crack-resistant earthenware, the set’s plates and bowls feature beautiful hand-painted decoration which is glazed to keep the color from fading and to prevent scratches to the design. Portmeirion’s earthenware can successfully withstand exposure to dishwashers, microwaves, and freezers, though rapid, extreme temperature changes should be avoided. The glasses are crafted in 1/16-inch thick clear tempered glass with hand-painted decoration. Standing 6 inches high, the glasses are dishwasher-safe. The placemats, made for Portmeirion by Pimpernel, are backed with a hard cork, finished with a protective resin. Portmeirion replaces any pieces found to be of faulty craftsmanship and offers a wide variety of complementary ceramic pieces. Made in England, the starter set measures 22-3/4 by 17 by 16-3/4 inches upon shipping and weighs 30 pounds upon shipping.

A very good deal
This is beautiful, tough, well-made china. It was actually made in Great Britain, and is by no means second quality stuff. The plates are rather deep with a rim of 3/4". The painting is crisp, and the patterns are centered on every dish (This seems to be a problem for other manufacturers to judge by the reviews.)

This set has the advantage of glasses (which I needed) rather than cups or mugs more commonly offered in sets (which I didn't need.) Portmeirion has apparently improved the highball glass quality since 2006; the glass thickness is now over 1/16" thick, and tempered. Earlier reviews had complained that the glasses were like eggshells.

It comes very well packaged in four nested boxes. However, one glass (out of eight) was chipped. Rather than send the whole set back to Amazon ($$$), I called Portmeirion USA in CT, and they sent out a new glass within a week. Customer Service for Portmeirion was very nice. The set is common enough to get replacements and expansion pieces readily, too.

The hardest thing about this set is finding flatware to go with it, as I couldn't find any recommendations. I ended up pairing it with "Medina" by Villeroy & Boch. The table looks great now. I highly recommend this set.

Portmeirion set is FANTASTIC!
After reading reviews about the Portmeirion starter set, I was sold and purchased three sets! Thank you to everyone before me who helped me decide these dishes were worth purchasing. I absolutely love them and think of Amazon every time I look at them.

Excellent Value - a durable and beautiful set
This beautiful set arrived intact and was shipped quickly. I am very pleased with the quality of the plates, bowls, and so forth.

The glasses some have mentioned as being flimsy have now been replaced with very heavy glasses that looks to be extremely durable and functional. I doubt you will find a better set for anywhere near this price and we plan to order a second set.

The placemats are durable and beautiful. I really didn't want them but they came with the set - however, now that they are here we use them every day and enjoy them. If you are into plants this is THE dinnerware to buy -- the illustrations are absolutely tasteful and beautiful.
