Hope he doesn't eat my coelacanth!
I got one of these beauties at the Dinosaur Store in Cocoa Beach, Florida (which will be opening its splendid new building later this year -- 2008 -- in case you are lucky enough to live in the area which I do not). Dunkleosteus was a huge, dramatically armored fish of the ancient seas, and if you have been to museums you may have seen him as a replica or a partial-fossil-model or in a mural. I especially like the related exhibit at the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, NY -- you might like it too (and they had toy trilobites there). Or you may have seen him in one of those computer-simulated TV shows. It's a cool fish.
This is a nicely sized toy, big enough for some serious detail, and it has a ferocious open mouth. Whether you are a kid in need of a wicked beastie or an adult dino hobbyist, or something in between or beyond, you are likely to enjoy this fish!
Oh, and for the curious... My coelacanth is one of those small Japanese snap-together models (gashapon?), but very beautiful, and I got it from UDF on eBay but their store seems to be gone.
Dunkleosteus fishasaurus
This is every bit as awesome as you think it's going to be, plus the fins are out so it can give you hugs when you're sad. Also although it's hard to see in the pictures, but the paint is a metallic bronze/gold/copper so the colortaion is pretty awesome.
However, unlike the latin name implies, I don't think it intended to be dunked in hot beverages.
An excellently unique toy.
There were many fascinating prehistoric animals long before the dinosaurs besides Dimetrodon, and Schliech is one of the few companies to have realized that. This is the ONLY prehistoric fish toy I have ever seen, so it's fortunate that it's a good one. The price is right and the toy is fairly large, tough, and well-detailed. Ol' Dunky is an excellent way to add some flavor to your prehistoric collection. Diversify, I say!
