Customer Reviews

A great macro-mini, but not for everyone4
First, the obvious. This miniature - though it seems silly to call it that - looks splendid. It stands about 7 inches tall, and has a wingspan of about 9 inches (both rough estimates). The level of detail is excellent - the scalework is finely done, the horns are appropriately wicked looking, and even the plating down the back and the barbed tail looks nasty. This mini is definitely a centerpiece.

In addition to the miniature itself, you get an oversized (3x5) miniature stat card. The black dragon points at an even 500 pts., so its an excellent foe for large warband battles. Also, a poster map of an underground grotto is also included for miniatures combat (or RPG use, of course). Finally, there is a sheet with scenarios, special rules, etc.

So why only 4 stars? This beastie is so powerful that gamemasters will probably only use it in an RPG game once per campaign. After that, its going to be a (spectacular) shelf decoration. The retail price tag of $29.99 is a little steep for such a limited use item (to say nothing of the Colossal Red Dragon at $74.99).

Another minor drawback of this mini is that it is placed on a square base, unlike all the other miniatures from the D&D minis line. Therefore, if you're using the dragon on a grid, you have to align it along only one of four directions. I would prefer if the mini had a round base so I could orient it in any direction on the battle grid.

For those that play the minis game, it will see use as an iconic warband opponent. I'd guess that there will be a lot of tourneys and game-store events involving dragon-slaying over the next few months. But this will also pass once other dragons in the line arrive, and the players want to fight the next dragon.

Still, its a splendid piece.

Can you really call it a "mini"?5
No matter what your reason for taking a look at this piece, you're going to be happy. The photos you see here just don't seem to do it justice, as I found when I stood holding it in my grubby hand. Whether your a dragon collector, into RPG, or simply a DDM skirmisher, this is a must have.

Really, though, can you call something that big a mini? Who cares! put in a shelf, place it in front of your gaming group, or crush your buddy's 500pt army. DO IT NOW!

Awesome "miniature"5
Wished I would have ordered this from Amazon (I paid full price at my hobby store) but this item is well worth it. Even if you never intend to play but love a high quality dragon to display--this is awesome. If you play, the stats on this bad boy will make you gasp and wonder "How can we defeat this?". Great to use for RPG or just in the minis game; but be warned--a very powerful dragon! These miniatures are beautiful works of art to boot!
