Roni Size didn't take jungle global the way he was supposed to (once again, club culture's unstoppable march halted at the U.S. border), but he certainly gave the under-sung Bristol scene a major boost. Though there are other branches of that scene--the Versatility and Technical Itch camps--most of it has coalesced around the related V Record and Full Cycle labels. V Classic is the first V compilation, and if it isn't as heady as Full Cycle's Music Box collection, it is still an announcement of a major alternative to London's dominance. Size kicks off with the much-played "It's Jazzy" (which, along with "It's a Jazz Thing," would lead many observers to assume he's a jazzhead, when in fact he's more a James Brown fan), followed by Goldie showing some respect by eerily remixing Size's "The Calling." The highlight, though, is DJ Krust's "Maintain," one of the few recent jungle tracks to put a female vocal front and center. Krust has been threatening to drop a monstrous debut album since 1997, and until it actually happens, all most of us have to go on are the dribs and drabs of brilliance doled out on 12-inch singles and the occasional compilation such as this. --Jeff Salamon

Excellent CD!
I love this cd! It is in my car disc changer right now! I was also lucky enought to hear this music live the night of. That's Right! I went to this Rave out in Los Angles at the Sports Arena the night of the New Year 1999! The party was Da Bomb with Bomb music. With AK1200 and others how can you pass this one up?
More mastered styles than Chinese Kung Fu
This album is all over the place, and everywhere it goes, it is excellent. From the funky and jazzy style of Roni Size, to the hardstep melancholy of Dillinja, this album has it all. I thoroughly love this album, and I spin it frequently. Highlights--well, they are all highlights--include: Roni Size's jazzy "It's Jazzy" (hence the title) and funky "Only a Dream", Krust's bumping "Blaze Dis One", and Die and Suv's elastic bass on "War and Peace". And as if this wasn't enough, there are also fantastic contributions from Lemon D, Ray Keith, and others. This album is a guide to some of the most revolutionary music coming out of the UK today.
Classic Drum 'n' Bass
One of the must own D'n'B compilation albums of the nineties featuring the original dons of drum 'n' bass like Goldie, Roni Size, and Dillinja(before he started making Clownstep! ). Just buy it, along with Vol. 2...Like the title says...Classics. Word up.
