Product Description

In a frozen wilderness steeped in darkness, the lines between good and evil, lover and enemy, are never black or white but drawn in Shades of Midnight.

Something inhuman is stalking the frigid Alaskan wilds, leaving unspeakable carnage in its wake. For bush pilot Alexandra Maguire, the killings stir memories of a horrific event she witnessed as a child and evoke in her the inexplicable sense of otherness she has long felt within herself but never fully understood . . . until a darkly seductive stranger with secrets of his own enters her world.

Sent from Boston on a mission to investigate the savage attacks and stop the slaughter, vampire warrior Kade has his own reasons for returning to the frigid, forbidding place of his birth. Haunted by a secret shame, Kade soon realizes the stunning truth of the threat he faces–a threat that will jeopardize the fragile bond he has formed with the courageous, determined young woman who arouses his deepest passions and most primal hungers. But in bringing Alex into his world of blood and darkness, Kade must confront both his own personal demons and the even greater evil that could destroy all he holds dear.

Awesome ! I couldn't put it down.5
Too often it seems that a series will start losing it's steam after a while but that hasn't happened with Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series. I was looking forward to the release of "Shades of Midnight" but was a little apprehensive about how I was going to feel about it since I knew it would be about Kade and I didn't feel like I knew him very well so I wasn't sure if I'd get into the story line or not. However, I was VERY pleasantly surprised. It started out with a bang and never got slow or boring. Once I started reading I could NOT put it down !! I thought the story flowed very well, the romance was very believable, Kade was smoking hot and I really liked Alex too. Oh, and did I mention that Kade is HOT, HOT, HOT !!

Like the previous reviewer I liked the change of scenery (set in Alaska), I also liked getting a chance to revisit the previous characters that I've come to know and care about. In the next book I hope we get to see a little of all of them (I especially miss Dante and Lucan and their mates).

I thought Lara did a great job of developing the main characters and the romance. I have really enjoyed reading this entire series and can't wait for the next book. Lara, thanks for weaving yet another very interesting and fun story. Keep up the great work.

Not my Fav in the Series, but can't win them all!3
I positively love Lara Adrian, and next to Kresley Cole I find her to be one of the top writers in this genre. That being said, I didn't like this book as much as her previous six. I'm not taking it too hard though because it was still better than most books out there and there for I give it 3 stars.

Something that I find Adrian particularly good at is her ability to write well rounded characters and awesome plots. This book fell short with one of the characters, and the plot was in and out.

I was not honestly looking forward to reading about Kade. I didn't feel like his character was evolved enough in the previous books for him to carry a whole book by himself. Thankfully, Adrian pulled it off with him and I thought he was completely sexy and deep by the end of the book...on the other hand his breed mate (Alex) was a cardboard cutout with no guts. In the beginning of the book I got excited, she sounded independent and intelligent, but as the book went on she just seemed to ramble. Alex's thought processes never got past wanting Kade and dealing with the death of her mother and brother. She was depressing, I got the feeling like the author didn't really know what to do with Alex either, considering there were times in the book were Alex would repeat the same thought process six times in each paragraph but just written slightly different...errr...that was aggravating. A lot of mediocre writers do this and because Adrian never did is a reason why I like her so much, so to see her doing it in this book tells me she may need a break from the series.

Anyways, the sub-plot was pretty good. I loved the back drop of the Alaskan out back. I really enjoyed the story line that followed the Ancient and since Adrian set it up were his body was not found in the end I'm hoping we will see more on him later in the series. I also liked reading more about Hunter and Chase (can't wait to get my hands on their stories). Although there were things that did not make since. One -- how the Ancient could get shot twice by a overweight redneck, but another Breed warrior can't hit him to save his life. Two -- the questions behind Hunter's character, why is it that he seems to love beating his brothers and father to death with his bare hands??? Strange, wouldn't he want to try to save his brothers from bondage rather than murder each of them single handedly? Doesn't he have any questions for his father...come on...not even one??? Again, I never had to question anything in her pervious books so I was amiss to have to do it here.

The next one coming in Sept 2010 will be about Brock (another newbie - so again not what I'd prefer) and I'm assuming the x-cop (friend to Alex) from this book that seems to be pretty intriguing. I'm crossing my fingers for the next installment, but I'm sure Adrian won't let me down. After all she's written six awesome books and one so so...you can't expect perfection all the time.

A great installment to the Midnight Breed series4
I enjoyed this installment. The prior two installments had me concerned over where the series was headed. But, this one was the shot in the arm that I think the series needed. I was hesitant to purchase this book because I really didn't feel connected to Kade, the main character. Though he was introduced in earlier books, his character had not been explored in any real detail. But, this story gives us quite a bit of Kade's backstory and endears the reader to both him and his mate, Alex. This installment, unlike the last couple of installments, did a lot to advance the series overall. I'm now interested in reading the next book. The story moved quickly, had tons of suspenseful moments, a good dose of romance and interesting characters. When I started this series, I was new to paranormal romance. I have now read this entire series to date (note to publishers: keep those free e-books a-coming, they really do pay off) and have read other authors in the genre. So far, Ms. Adrian is still my favorite. Her characters are interesting, the world she has created with the Breeds has seemingly limitless opportunities for a good story and I appreciate her writing style. I give it four stars instead of 5 because I'm not sure how good it would have been as a stand alone novel (Ms. Adrian does a great deal to explain what has happened in the earlier books, but viewing this book objectively, I think I would have been kind of lost with some of the references from earlier books. I suspect this will become increasingly problematic as the series continues to evolve.) Plus, I'm getting a little tired of the whole angst ridden male who thinks he's too good for the female that he can't seem to keep his hands off of. "I'm no good for you, but I must have you..." Uh huh. In that sense, the story is a bit predictable. But, overall, I enjoyed this book.
