Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $725.98
This 3rd generation member of Nikon's mid-range lineup inherits exceptional technology from the D3: superb low noise performance, chromatic aberration correction, stunning 3" display, and more. Its great images and refined features make it a great choice for the serious amateur. Truly, you'll have to go full frame to improve on the D90's image quality.

Buy new: $2,609.66 / Used from: $1,100.00
This is arguably the finest APS-C format camera on the planet, and a worthy successor to the venerable D200. This camera, along with the full-frame D700 & D3, truly raise the bar for the competition. If you're a pro/semi-pro looking for a DX sensor Nikon -- you probably already own one! If you're an advanced amateur, consider the superb D90 plus a Nikon 18-200mm for the price of a D300 body.
Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $1,199.95 / Used from: $596.99
Incredible feature set, ruggedness, and quality - plus the superb handling and ergonomics Nikon is known for - the D200 was my long-time workhorse after moving up from the D70. Now you can own this classic at bargain used prices. Although it has been replaced by the 3rd-generation D300, which offers a near 2-stop improvement in usable ISO performance, the D200 is still a very capable camera.
D70 Digital Camera (Body Only)D70 Digital Camera (Body Only)
Buy used from: $315.00
My DSLR journey started with this 1st-generation Nikon D70 that now goes for under $300 used. It made an incredible splash when it came out in 2004. Now available for a fraction of its original cost, it still makes a fantastic starter camera on a tight budget.
Nikon D700 12.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Nikon D700 12.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

To call this full-frame gem a prosumer camera seems demeaning -- it's a superb camera with an extraordinary dynamic range and leading-class ISO performance to 12800. All the superlatives of the D300 apply, plus many more. The AF fine adjustment feature is huge. The D3 and D700 need FX lenses, which adds significantly to cost of ownership. My favorite Nikon ever..
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor LensNikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $1,159.95 / Used from: $549.99
With an incredible zoom range and image stabilization that routinely gains 4 stops, of my many lenses, this is my favorite DX walk-around lens. Why? It replaces a bag full of lenses, and gets shots you missed before while changing lenses. My copy gives sharp, contrasty images, plus is compact and light compared to pro glass. A modern technology marvel and a ton of fun.
Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $244.00
I never warmed up to the 50mm f/1.8 lens on a DX camera, but this one I highly recommend as your "low light" lens on a D300, D90, or other DX camera. It's extremely sharp, even wide open, and focuses accurately in an instant. Very compact -- so you can always fit it in your bag. On a tight budget? Make this your first lens!
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasSigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $479.00
With most zooms only going to 17 or 18mm, I soon missed the wider fields I could get with my film wide-angle primes. This sharp Sigma zoom for DX cameras adds an amazing capability (and 10 is really wide compared to the 12mm on alternative lens). This lens is a lot of fun; it's the Sigma even many Pros use.
Nikon Zoom Super Wide Angle 20-35mm f/2.8 D-IF Aspherical Autofocus LensNikon Zoom Super Wide Angle 20-35mm f/2.8 D-IF Aspherical Autofocus Lens
Buy used from: $745.00
This film-era, all-metal pro zoom (originally $1600) is a bargain on the used market and is great for interior, low-light candids. This constant aperture Nikkor is razor sharp even wide open, works with both DX and FX DSLRs, plus is smaller, lighter, and has less distortion than newer ultra-wide pro Nikon zooms. I'm a sucker for wide zooms; this one is terrific fun on my D700.
Nikon 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D ED-IF AF Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D ED-IF AF Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $625.02 / Used from: $370.00
New to FX? Here's another great FX wide angle choice. Compared to the superb Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8D, it's much cheaper and lighter. This, along with the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 and 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF-S lens provide a trio of sharp yet affordable lenses for a D700 newbie. Hopefully Nikon soon releases updated versions of these value optics for FX.

Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $495.00
This is a terrific lens -- it's sharp, has VR that's quite effective, reasonably light & compact, and it works on both DX and FX cameras -- all at a reasonable price. Gives a 105-450mm equivalent on a D90 or D300.
Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom LensNikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens
Buy new: $1,339.88 / Used from: $1,019.00
This sharp, pro-grade lens delivers a constant f/2.8 aperture over the entire zoom range, plus has fast, near-silent focusing. A great low light lens, but in a bulky and heavy package that will appeal mainly to pros. If you're a pro and have your sights on a full-frame DSLR later, take a look at the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 instead -- it covers both DX and FX -- but is again big & bulky.

Buy new: $449.00 / Used from: $362.95
The best of the 3rd-party alternatives to the Nikon 17-55mm lens above. Build quality is no match for the costlier Nikkor, and it's a bit slower to focus in low light, but image quality is extraordinary even wide open. Very light and compact, plus 1/3 the price! Be forewarned that there have been quality problems (e.g., focus errors), so if you buy one, be sure and test it carefully.
Lowepro Nova 170 AW Camera Bag (Chestnut Brown)Lowepro Nova 170 AW Camera Bag (Chestnut Brown)
Buy new: $49.95 / Used from: $46.99
Like all photographers, I have numerous bags in many sizes for different needs. However, the 170 is my "vacation kit" bag. It perfectly holds, for example, my D90 + 18-200mm, 10-20mm, 35mm f/1.8, and flash for fast retrieval, plus filters, memory, batteries, and charger. It even has a belt loop and weather shield..
Hoya 72mm UV (Ultra Violet) Multi Coated Glass FilterHoya 72mm UV (Ultra Violet) Multi Coated Glass Filter

This filter has a very effective coating (be sure to get super HMC) that noticeably cuts glare over uncoated ones, yet is attractively priced.

I've standardized on SanDisk Extreme CompactFlash cards. Many pros use them and they have been 100% reliable for me. Carrying multiple cards gives redundancy in case of a rare failure.

Buy new: $549.99 / Used from: $269.00
Every serious photographer needs a camera that slips easily in the pocket, and goes everywhere for those times you're without your big guns. I like the 4x optical (15x optical + digital) wide zoom (28-105mm film camera equivalent), big 3" LCD, AUTO ISO to 1600, and image stabilization. Much higher noise than a DSLR, but at least you'll get the picture.
Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $245.07 / Used from: $220.00
One of the reasons I went with Nikon is their amazing flash system, which integrate existing and flash lighting to achieve very natural results. The SB-600 gives a lot of bang for the buck. See http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/SB800_techniques.pdf for great flash tips. This tool will expand your world of great picture taking.

The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2 by Scott Kelby

This is the second volume of Scott Kelby's techniques used by Pro's. I liked the first volume so much that I got this one, too. Both are a great investment.

Buy new: $18.21 / Used from: $8.47
This is a useful compendium of techniques on how to get the best image quality at every step, from equipment choice to printing. Covers some uncommon special topics: lens testing (something you should do to evaluate each new or used lens purchase), picking a computer for image work, workflow and image enhancement techniques with Photoshop, etc. A lot of great info in one place.

Eventually your sensor will need cleaning. This low-cost device can direct a blast of filtered air to dislodge dust and particles, and is a safe way to clean the sensor or lenses. Most of the time, this is all your sensor needs to be clean again.
Digital Survival KIT - Sensor Swab Type 2 (w/Eclipse)Digital Survival KIT - Sensor Swab Type 2 (w/Eclipse)
Buy new: $19.99
In time (or if you purchase a used DSLR), your sensor won't come clean simply using a Rocket duster (above). To check your sensor, photograph a light surface (like the sky) with a very small aperture (f22 or greater). Particles will show up as blurry spots. First read http://www.bythom.com/cleaning.htm and then use this cleaner kit to make your sensor like new.
Adobe Photoshop CS4Adobe Photoshop CS4
Buy new: $642.49
One of the new worlds that digital photography opens is image processing, and Photoshop is the premier software tool for transforming your images into finished works. If you're new to this, start with Photoshop Elements; it gives you most of the essential tools at a fraction of the cost of the full Photoshop suite. Students & teachers -- Adobe has great discounts in this and other Adobe products!
Epson Stylus Photo R1800 Inkjet PrinterEpson Stylus Photo R1800 Inkjet Printer
Buy used from: $329.99
Once you perfect capturing and enhancing your images, you'll want to make the best prints imaginable. Epson printers produce stunning prints with beautiful color and detail. The R1800 is a lower cost alternative to the terrific R2400, and makes incredible matte and glossy prints (glossier than the pricier R2400) in sizes up to 13x44" with 200 year archival ink.
Nikon D3x 24.5MP FX Digital SLR (Body Only)Nikon D3x 24.5MP FX Digital SLR (Body Only)
Buy new: Too low to display
This will surely look out of place here, and I'm not getting one anytime soon, but I know digital nirvana when I see it. This flagship Nikon pretty much defines the state-of-the-art; however, the new D700 is a lower-cost sibling that serves the rest of us well, plus is significantly lighter and more compact. The D3X deserves only the best pro glass (below).
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,939.97 / Used from: $1,499.00
This lens is big, heavy, and expensive. Now for the superlatives: uncompromisingly sharp -- even wide open, ultra-quiet and fast focusing, fixed f2.8 aperture, plus VR. This exceptional pro-grade lens isn't for everyone (and the price helps make sure of that), but it effectively replaces all the prime lenses in it's zoom range -- it's that good.
Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,097.95 / Used from: $848.00
This is a lower-cost, but still tack-sharp, pro-grade alternative to the lens above. Although, it lacks VR, it doesn't have the vignetting problems of the 70-200mm. If your interest is outdoor sports or nature photography, and you use a tripod or monopod anyway, you won't find better.
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom LensNikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens
Buy new: $1,779.00 / Used from: $1,739.99
Also uncompromisingly good, this lens, the 70-200mm, and the D3X will set you back $12 grand, plus you'll be yearning for the 14-24 F2.8 next. If this is just a hobby, now you've got a serious addiction; however, if you're a pro, these are quality tools of the trade that stand up to punishment and deliver the goods.
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom LensNikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens
Buy new: $1,844.86
Test reports suggest Nikon has truly achieved perfection with this design -- it is exceptional without peer (including other brands). 14-24mm is amazingly wide on FX bodies, but still a respectably-wide 21-36mm equivalent on DX bodies.
Nikon 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF Autofocus Nikkor Zoom LensNikon 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF Autofocus Nikkor Zoom Lens
Here's a tip for D700/D3 owners wanting a wide zoom-range, do-everything walk-around lens. Yeah, it's one of those plastic consumer-grade lenses, but this tiny gem produces contrasty sharp images, with near macro close focusing. Snap one up before others catch on and they become scarce. Prefer going wider? The 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 is another good FX choice (although my 28-200mm is sharper).
Nikon TC-14E II (1.4x) Teleconverter AF-S for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon TC-14E II (1.4x) Teleconverter AF-S for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $404.97
Give your 70-200mm (or 80-200mm) f2.8 zoom a 1.4x focal length increase (to 280mm) without noticeable image degradation. AF-S function is even retained. A lower-cost alternative that is reportedly also sharp is the Kenko PRO 1.4x teleconverter.

Buy new: $95.00
I'm a fan of monopods for their travel graces, and really like the lightweight (1.8 lb) 681B from Bogen Manfrotto. They're a very effective alternative to a tripod for great, sharp shots with long lenses, plus are easy to tote around. The quick release head and swivel tilt is a must.
