Crash Bandicoot is often described as the PlayStation's answer to Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog. Sony's foray into 3-D Super Mario-style adventures wasn't quite as direct, however, as its closest approximations were the Spyro the Dragon games. Sony's attempts may have been a little simplistic, but they were still better efforts than most, and this new isometric Spyro offering on the GBA is also surprisingly fun.
Spyro has the same basic range of moves as he had on the PlayStation, letting you jump and float around the game world breathing fire at everything in your path. Although the basic gameplay simply involves you collecting hundreds of fairies and other items, the makers have gone to great lengths to ensure things don't get too monotonous, mostly through a long series of subquests and minigames. The minigames are particularly good, as they often use a side-on or first-person perspective, which makes for a nice change of pace.
The only problem with the game is the rather empty feeling that pervades. The levels are enormous and it's easy to get lost, but this is a problem that could easily be leveled at the original PlayStation games, too. It's hardly revolutionary, but a pleasing amount of effort has gone into this, and it's certain to make fans of the series happy. --David Jenkins

Yet another PlayStation platform mainstay makes a Game Boy Advance debut in Spyro: Season of Ice. Digital Eclipse, a longtime handheld developer that has made a splash on the GBA with Rayman Advance, is developing the game. Like its sister title, Spyro is shaping up as a game that plays and looks great. It features 25 levels, many of which have Spyro using his classic moves such as gliding, hovering, and breathing fire. The story features an ambitious yet dimwitted librarian who uses a spell to give himself power. Unfortunately, the spell also gives him two heads--each with a killer migraine. The cure calls for the wings of 100 fairies, so the villain freezes the fairies across the land and sends his henchmen to collect them. At the last minute, a magic balloon is sent to Spyro asking for his help. As in previous games, his vacation is interrupted and it's up to him to save the day.
Although the game has classic isometric levels, racing and shooting levels are also thrown in for variety. Locations include lava prairie, hummingbird fort, honey marsh, Roman holiday, star park, space-age speedway, and ant farm. The game's variety, as well as its replay value, is very impressive. There are many secret levels and up to 70,000 gems to find. --Raymond M. Padilla

Excellent challanging lengthy game
I am an adult who is addicted to game boy. Normally I prefer puzzle games, but this game is outstanding. You must work your way through 25 levels gathering gems and finding the frozen fairies, which are not always easy to find. In each world there are several levels. One you play as Sparx (who has different abilities from Spyro) and manuver among insects finding the keys and collecting special powers to unlock the doors to get to the fairy, and the rest you play as Spyro. Each level is unique and there are enemies to defeat and clever ways of finding the fairies. In some levels you must accomplish a task, such as catching a thief or turning on all of the lighthouses or freeing a caged bird or ringing bells in the correct order. You can breathe fire, fly, float and ram into objects. You cannot enter a new world until you gather a sufficient number of fairies which can be very frustrating because you must keep going back to find where they are hidden. I enjoyed the Speedway level. It is different from the regular levels because you have to beat the time and collect all of the gems without running into enemies. I enjoy this game and feel it is well worth the money.
excellent game
this is a must buy!! It has full 360 degree, 3-D, exploration (movement). You ve seen the playstation version, well here it is again, better than ever, becuase its the same graphics, possibly even better, but on a handhled, amazing!!! if this doesnt keep you occupied for hours even days, possibly months... THen nothin else will, guaranteed. Overall, fantastic graphics, unbeliveable gameplay, and good value.
not as good as PS buuuuuuuuuut....
This game was not as good as the playstation game. If i could i would give it 4 1/2 stars but i can't and it's DEFINETLY not bad enough to get 4 stars. Anyways the basic plot is that there is a sorceror ryhnoc named Grendor. Bianca, (a sorceress from year of the dragon) comes in to the library to check out books to plan for her vacation. But she is carrying so many other books she accidently leaves her spellbook behind. Grendor finds a spell which will make him stong and smart. But he reads it upside-down and it gives him two heads and two headaches. The only cure is one hundred fairy wings. So he freezes all the fairies.
You go around finding or earning fairies by melting them with your fire breath. There are twenty five levels, each of them has a few wacked-out characters that tell you what to do. The speedways are a big dissapointment but other than that this game is awsome. It has extremely good graphics and gameplay. The sound is cheesy and repetative but you can turn that off. Unlike year of the dragon there are not levels within levels. But this is okay because because instead of lots of small easy levels there are 25 five big and challenging ones. this game is far better than anything i could have expected. all in all this is a great game and you should stop reading my boring review and go buy it.
