Ah, the memories!5
When I was young, I hungered for Mister Machine the way that, in later years, I hungered for beautiful sexpot movie stars. I imagine that I must have pestered my parents mercilessly for my very own Mister Machine.

It's got gears and cogs! It walks by itself! Its mouth opens and closes! Its outside is clear, so you can see its innards while they spin and click! And you can take it apart yourself and put it back together again!

On Christmas morning, there he was under the tree: Mister Machine! It was the most amazing gift I had ever gotten, the most amazing, to this day, that I can ever recall getting.

Alas, while my father took the older kids to church, I stayed home with my mother. While she relaxed in the next room over a Christmas cup of coffee, I disassembled Mister Machine with my own little hands.

All the king's horses, and all the king's etcetera etcetera. I was mystified that I couldn't put him back together like they did in the commercial. My father, upon returning from church, hit the roof that the fancy schmacy toy had not lasted a single hour, and as for him putting the thing back together for me, forget it. Mister Machine never walked by himself again. His mouth never opened or closed again. I could see his innards, sure, but they neither spun nor clicked as they sat strewn all over the living room floor. After the dog nearly choked on one of Mister Machine's cogs, my mother got the broom and dustpan, and I was never allowed to mention Mister Machine in the house again.

Oh, Mister Machine! Come back to me!

Not Like The Good Ol' Days4
This is a good replica, but it doesn't have the same impact as the original Mr. Machine. Sure, they used some of the original molds, but the plastic is thinner and isn't clear yellow like the original. Also, the spring doesn't have much resilience and doesn't power the gears very far: you end up having to push the toy along to release the tension after only a few feet. My original Mr. Machine (1963) went for yards before it wound down.

As the packaging / advertising says, this is not a toy; it's a collectable replica and probably doesn't have a lot of play built into it. So make some space on your desk or old toy shelf and wind it up only to impress those old enough to remember Mr. Machine. Otherwise, (like any toy that gets used) it's bound to break sooner or later.

I had this when I was little! I LOVED IT! I have several photos of me as a kid with mine. A GREAT toy to be sure!
