Customer Reviews
One of the best records I ever heard...
I had forgotten about this record because my cassette tape collection has been stashed away in the closet for quite some time now. A friend of mine had taped the LP and I played it all the time in the early eighties. Being a bassist, I was a huge Jeff Berlin fan and always liked Bruford. The performances are amazing as you would expect. So, I'm at a gig recently and our keyboard player is unloading his car. His stereo is playing and the track "Five G" starts - I hear this killer slap bass intro and I know I've heard this before, but couldn't name the band. The funny thing about that track is that Jeff Berlin is not really known for his slap bass playing. It's like he just dabbled with it, mastered it and moved on. After discussing what record it was, I did a quick search, found the CD and bought it. I hadn't heard this record in over twenty years and I'm glad I discovered it again by accident.
The Drumming is Excellent, But the Music....
Hey, I like Bill Bruford! I liked him in Yes and I liked him in King Crimson. I admit I have not heard his other band involvements until this effort. I agree that any muscician deserves to play with whomever they want. Fine. Can't they at least wait until they have some good material before releasing an album? I tried to like this album, I really did. I love jazz and jazz fusion too, but this is no Weather Report. All in all this disc is OK, but I doubt it will see much play at my house. The songs just don't do it for me Bill. Don't get me wrong, this is a good album. I would, however, recommend those new to Mr. Bruford to look first to his excellent contributions to Close to the Edge (Yes), Fragile (Yes), Discipline (King Crimson), red (King Crimson), etc. Bill Bruford is an excellent drummer and if it were not for him, I never would have heard this tepid album in the first place. - Ciao
faith renewed
This album was brought to my attention during a dry spell where there didn't seem to be any new music worth listening to (a few years back). I was blown away right from the beginning. I had always been a big fan of Brufords with Yes but had no idea at the time that he was putting out music like this.
Alan Holdsworth does a stellar job on this recording and the music will satisfy any prog lover. It definitely has its fusion moments but overall has a great prog feel.
I was so appreciative of this album that I went out and got Brufords next work ("Gradually going tornado") but was a bit dissapointed as it didn't live up to this one. (No Holdsworth for one thing) Still worth getting as well.
