Circle on a square
PIECED CURVES spends the first twenty four pages explaining things like the essentials such as materials and equipment; color and design principles, where to get inspiration and things about fabric such as to wash or not to wash, building a fabric pantry (I call it a stash) and creating a color palette. That is fully a quarter of the book.
The technique, which was what I wanted to learn, was explained in four pages. It wasn't the simple thing I thought it would be. It was involved because it takes eleven steps to create a circle on a square. When I make such a square, I cut out a circle, iron under a seam allowance and blind stitch it to the square. Done. This technique involves glue, sewing between the square and the circle on the cut seam allowance and removing the freezer paper pattern. Too much for me.
Of the quilts shown in the book. I might try my hand at four or five of them. The rest were way too involved for my tastes. They were more like fiber art than quilts, something very beautiful but nothing I would want to do. This is a good book for anyone who is involved in fiber arts or needs a good review of color and design principles.
Pieced Curves really is so simple
I found Dale Flemings book well thought out and visually engaging. The projects demonstrate the inovative techniques well. For the more adventuresome she does a great job of sharing her methods of coming up with original designs. Using her techniques you can piece anything you can think up. She has a great color sense. I enjoyed the wide variety quilts shown also. Its a great book for inspiration.
VERY HARD TO read this book
I love the concept when I saw her on Simply quilts...I pulled up their web site and everything refers you back to the book...well...I wish I never bought this book...the author is so HARD to read and understdand, very choppy and goes into detail that is not necessary at all! You will understand once you start with her credits...I have been quilting for 25 years! This is one of the worst quilting books ever...!
