Like a Rolling Stone...
I can't say I disagree with some of the reviews I've seen -- DWYW really does take awhile to get going, but I think that's the point: there are so many deep layers to what's going on, that it becomes difficult to get it all out at once! That's probably what draws me the most to this story: the subtlety and complexity of the narrative.
Revolving around Jinwon Hyun, one of the hottest boys in class and singer extraordinaire, Yeri Na weaves a complicated web of intense drama, high tension, and complicated feelings. I've heard many say that the story is confusing, but isn't this time in anyone's life just as confusing? Na captures the constantly changing feelings and deep emotions that we all feel in our high school years: Jinwon loves Hosoo, but in what way? And when Dana comes into the picture, who knows where his heart will wander? Similarly, what will become of Soomin Jo and Hosoo? It's bad enough that our young boys are all in love, but when pressures from home, work and school mount to a fever-pitch, who knows what will happen! The way the story jumps from thought to thought captures the momentary distractions and tiny asides that make this Manhwa so good (and so true-to-life), and the tentative dips in and out of boy love that each character experiences really makes me wonder what's ultimately going to happen.
DWYW truly is like a rolling stone. When it first starts off, it needs time to gather its momentum and get itself going, but when it gets going, like it does around Ch 3, the story really takes off! I think everyone owes it to themselves to read past the first chapter and into the second and third ones (all the way to the end, if you can!). DWYW is a rewarding exploration of the feelings - confusing, frustrating and tough as those feelings can be - that we all will feel at some point in our lives. I can't wait for the next volume to get released. Give this stone some time to get rollin', and you won't be disappointed!
adore its complexity and multi layered plot
I love Do Whatever you Want it has some very interesting underlying messages that I think everyone should understand universally. It's a series about questioning one's self worth and what lengths you will go to figure out who you are. It's a manga full of relationships, friendships, deep and shallow, social issues about juveniles and even the lack of communication between adults and kids. A series chock full of angst and wonderfully complex relationships. There are also a lot of heartwarming and touching scenes as well as some innuendo and yaoi-sub-text.
This story can touch the heart deeply. Issues of self-worth are complex and compelling story lines. This series hits all the marks. I was in love from book one. For the most part its a fantastic tale of blossuming love and friendships and people coming to understand one another and growing past terrible history as well as coming to understand ones' self. It a great growth story. This series cracks me up and alternately makes me cry. The authors create a complex and multi-layered story. I love and adore Do Whatever you Want.
I just wish more of the books in the series would be released in a more timely manner.
