Jean De Florette / Manon of the Spring (MGM World Films)Jean De Florette / Manon of the Spring (MGM World Films)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $10.87
Catches your attention early; deeply interesting to watch; powerful impact. You'll never forget it. Jean De Florette stands on its own -- Manon of the Spring is a sequel, to be watched only if you've first seen "Jean", and it nicely closes out the pair of films.

A delightful film like few others. A meandering story of a modern-day woman's quest to learn how to make the perfect noodle soup for her restaurant, this tongue-in-cheek comedy will remind you of samurai films, The Wizard of Oz, all mixed up with a bunch of short vignettes that are funny, sexy, thought-provoking. You'll watch this over and over again.
Ikiru - Criterion CollectionIkiru - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $18.00
A Kurasawa film that (for some reason) seems to appeal far more to men than women. An older man thinks he's quite ill, and searches some meaning in his life. Toward the end of the film, we begin to understand what he ultimately found as the meaning or purpose of his life, and it's simply beautiful. But, the film is longer and slower than you may wish to see, even for a foreign film.
Kagemusha - Criterion CollectionKagemusha - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $21.99
Although some think Kurosawa's greatest epic is RAN, I vote for Kagamusha, the gripping tale of a ribald thief who must play the part of a stately warlord for a few years. Be patient for the first 15 minutes, and you'll soon be into it.
The Return of Martin Guerre [IMPORT, All Regions ]The Return of Martin Guerre [IMPORT, All Regions ]
Buy used from: $7.98
Absolutely powerful, absolutely gripping, the love story imbedded in this medieval tale is so utterly believable that it will no doubt deeply move you.
Swept Away (Digitally Remastered Edition)Swept Away (Digitally Remastered Edition)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $12.49
"Sweeping" romance of a sort you definitely won't expect when you begin watching the movie. Relax, watch the film, and you'll understand later how the somewhat harsh beginning is vital to develop the story later. But you must watch it subtitled, the dubbed version is terrible. And stay far away from the Madonna version.
Seven Samurai (Criterion Collection Spine #2)Seven Samurai (Criterion Collection Spine #2)
Buy used from: $11.90
You'll have to forget about the idea of love interests, which are always inserted into Western films. This film is a slow-paced but gripping story of a rag-tag bunch of down-on-their-luck samurai, each noble in his own way, who are so desperate for work that they take on a mission to protect a small impoverished village from a group of bandits.
Ju DouJu Dou
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.39
I feel I must put at least one film by Yimou on this list, and I'm undecided which -- most lists cite "Raise.. Lantern" as his best, I find it harder to choose.
TevyeTevye
Buy new: $36.00 / Used from: $28.80
This film, made just before the destruction of European Jewry, captures such a feel for that culture, particularly in Maurice Schwartz's perfectly nuanced performance, that it will stay with you. Powerful and heart-wrenching.
Babette's FeastBabette's Feast
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $7.16
This film will give you a sense of a deeper world that you might never have sensed was there. Be patient with it, but even when the storyline is slow, the cinematography makes up for it. You will come away from the film wanting something greater in live than you have experienced yet; you will have a sense of how great things can be.

A charming, warm film of remembrance of one's childhood.
