Jackie DuPont thought life was over when she lost her husband. Little did she know of the pain and joys that were to come. Lost in a world of sleepless nights and lonely days, Jackie finds she’s pregnant with her late husband’s child. How can she be a mother when simply getting out of bed is a struggle? Add to it a rape by a prominent attorney where she’s left for dead and we wonder, how much can Jackie’s heart take? Life seems to think she can take more—when the heart wins its battle with the mind and she falls in love, only to find herself surrounded by gunfire. Join Jackie on her journey as she discovers that it takes more courage to live than to die, to stand up for justice no matter how difficult, and to hold strong to a second chance at love—even if it means risking it all.

"Can't miss" formula,...combining tragedy with romance & throwing in enough criminal activities to build and hold the reader's interest." -- The Sunday Enterprise, August 31, 2003 Zel Levin, Easton author's book combines tragedy, romance
From the Author
This excerpt is very strong in nature. It's PART of the story which involves a terrible crime against women-AGAINST ANYONE- rape. Although not pleasant to read, it's paramount to the story's plot. Jackie finds the strength within herself to fight back against this rapist, this animal- seeing justice served. I tried to handle the scene without being overly graphic, as our imaginations and sadly our personal experiences often fill in the blanks better than words ever could. Please know: just as my character Jackie found the courage to take this rapist to court, having him punished to the fullest extent of the law, my wish is for all victims of rape to do the same. Not only for yourselves, but to protect others who may become the next victim if the rapist is allowed to run free in society. An even greater wish is to end all violence against women, against everyone.
Sincerely,
Ellen M. DuBois

"Jackie's Heart" is time well invested.

Jackie's Heart has an intriquing plot.
I thought the book started off a little slow with ambulances and dreary hospitals; BUT Ms. DuBois rapidly entices the reader to continue. The main character, Jackie is a likeable person; whom readers can relate to. Once past the introductory pages, I could not put the book down until I finished reading it. I anxiously turned the pages. Reading 'Jackie's Heart' was a very enjoyable experience, including the elements of romance, danger, and intrique. I encourage others to also read Ms. Dubois' captivating book.
I couldn't put it down!
There are some books that have actually made we wake up thinking about what happens next. Jackie's Heart by Ellen DuBois is one of them. I awoke one morning at around 4:30 a.m., about mid way through this action packed, emotionally riveting novel and just HAD to know what was going to occur! From the moment I started reading, I was absorbed completely. There are so many things going on in Jackie's life- yet she somehow finds a way to go on. I wondered if I'd be able to do the same, and realized that when pushed against a corner as this character was, I'd have no choice. The REALISM of this character, and her best friend, is incredible. I didn't feel like I was reading about people I couldn't relate to- exactly the opposite. I couldn't call this book a romance, but there's romance in it. It's not all suspense, yet it's got plenty. The terrible rape was handled tactfully yet powerfully by the author. I don't think there was a moment when I wasn't rooting for Jackie. Loved this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to dive head-first into an easy to read, straight to the heart story. A+
Easton author's book combines tragedy, romance
The Sunday Enterprise, August 31, 2003, by Zel Levin, Special to The Enterprise
Using a "can't miss" formula, Easton resident Ellen M. DuBois has come up with and unusual full-length novel, her first, combining tragedy with romance and throwing in enough criminal activities to build and hold the reader's interest.
The plot starts to unfold at the very beginning as Jackie, the book's heroine, awaits the familiar sound of her husband's car in the driveway. Her spouse, Mat, always was punctual and- why not- they were deeply in love. But now, as Jackie waited nervously, she sensed something wrong, a feeling augmented by a phone call. There had been an accident and her severely injured husband was a patient at Boston University Hospital.
Christmas is approaching and one would hope the author might work in a miraculous recovery. Tragically, not. Mat succumbs in three days and now a grief-stricken widow faces life alone. Among her recollections are the good times they had together, including the last time they had sex.
But Christmas is a season for miracles and, sure enough, one occurs.
Feeling ill after the tragedy, she had gone to her family doctor whose diagnosis revealed the cause of her illness- she was pregnant. Briefly, she contemplates abortion- but no- this was Mat's baby, too! And not just one baby. Ultrasound had indicated that twins were on the way.
With estate matters to be settled, she consults a lawyer, handsome David Kelley, who has an eye for beauty as well as for business, and who decides to get better acquainted with his new (and attractive) client.
Innocently, Jackie informs the lawyer that she is pregnant. Feeling he had been misled, his reaction is unadulterated rage which he satisfies by raping Jackie, throwing her from his car, and speeding off.
As police search for the unscrupulous lawyer, Jackie's suspicions are aroused by visits from two strangers posing as policemen. Meanwhile, she is puzzled by the unexplained absence of her doctor, and risks her life to find him.
This novel may be a first for Ellen DuBois but she certainly knows how to work in a variety of angles. So there's a satisfactory conclusion- the bad guys are caught, the twins are born and- guess what- Jackie, becomes a bride again, the wife of the doctor who guided her through her pregnant period.
