Vieuxtemps violin concertos revisited
This new recording of Vieuxtemps Violin concerto n.1 (the second on my knowledge after Paul Rosenthal and Biddulph recording), coupled with Concerto n.4, is a real masterpiece. Keylin is a very great musician, not only a superb virtuoso. His phrasing conveys all the fascination of the operatic music of Vieuxtemps's times (XIX century) and it seems that Keylin's violin resurrects the airs and cantabili of the great soprano of Vieuxtemps's times, Malibran, Patti, etc. I specially like Concerto n.1, for its wonderful orchestral score, and for the fluency of Mr. Keylin's interpretation. It is a pity that nowadays conductors ignore,up to now, the beauty of this concerto. All lovers of opera and violin music should listen to these performances of Maestro Keylin. Concerto n.4 is beautifully performed, too, each note has its particular emphasis, as it deserves in this kind of operatic music. Also the recording is technically of a very his class. Good listening to all!
Vieuxtemps Concertos Nos. 1 & 4
A trully impressive recording! I think that the soloist displays Vieuxtemps at his very best, and one find these concertos astonoshing. The sound of Keylin is beautiful, and yet it has all of the subtle expressive nuances to make this a first-rate CD. I strongly recommend this disc to anyone who loves the Romantics.
Vieuxtemps & Keylin - Recommended Highly - 4 1/2
Vieuxtemps had a wonderful gift of creating beautiful music specifically for the violin and, too bad, much of his work is forgotten except for concerti 4 and 5. These concerti are beautiful in their own right and should be in every violinist's library if not repertoire.
About the violinist's performance: Mr. Keylin has a most beautiful tone, wonderful intonation, and some of the more tastefully accomplished glissandi I have ever heard. After listening to him closely, the resemblance to the (dare I say it) sound of the great virtuoso Leonid Kogan is instantly brought to mind.
However, to get five stars from this reviewer, the performer would have had to have brought more drama into this piece, which I am sure he is capable of doing after my having closely listened to his fabulous technique and obvious command of his instrument. He could have added more life to this piece. In places where he had an up-tempo it should have been more up-tempo and daring. I fear he was too concious of playing perfectly instead of going-for-broke. It made what should have been highly dramatic passages sound rather trite and boring ... a pity; but make no mistake ... I am not faulting this man's playing at all. I am very impressed. His playing is nigh perfect. Give a little more dash and spice and electrifying drama and I'll gladly give the five. A little rubato wouldn't have hurt. Get away from the metronome! Elasticity of tempo is not a crime.
