![]() | Dark Passion Play by Nightwish
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.25 I actually only found out about this band yesterday, and let me just say that I am completely mesmerized. Not only is the idea of combining metal with orchestral music something that totally shocked me, but the execution is nearly flawless. The songwriting is also amazing, as is the lead singer's voice. Also, watch the video for Amaranth if you get the chance - absolutely breathtaking.

![]() | Across The Universe [Deluxe Edition] by Original Soundtrack
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.91 It is true that the sole purpose of the movie's plot was to fit in as many of the band's songs as possible. However, they are done so well that it becomes entirely forgivable. I was amazed to learn that all the songs were recorded live during the filming, as the vocals sound so good.

![]() | The Otherly Opus by Joy Electric
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $3.59 I've been a fan of many bands and artists over the years, but there's no band that has consistently continued to inspire me the way that Joy Electric has. The newest album continues the tradition, and adds to it with Ronnie Martin layering his IMO much underrated vocals the way he usually does with his synths.

![]() | Zeitgeist by Smashing Pumpkins
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.96 It is true that this album only shows one side of the band, but what is done is done well. The single "Tarantula" is catchy and upbeat, although my favorite song on the album is the title track, "Zeitgeist" (which, unfortunately, makes its appearance as a bonus track only available on the version of the cd sold at Target).

![]() | Duet All Night Long by Reel Big Fish
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $1.62 Besides writing original songs about drinking and gratuitous profanity, Reel Big Fish is well known as a cover band. Here they team up with tourmates Zolof The Rock & Roll Destroyer for 6 cover songs from the 80s. The new versions of the first 4 songs are quite energetic and fun (the last 2 less so).

![]() | Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps for Free by Reel Big Fish
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.99 I won't argue that the songs could have been better if they had spent more time in the studio, but the songs are still good, and more of what listeners have come to expect from Reel Big Fish. This album strips away all pretense, and shows the core of the band without any glossiness - a funloving ska band.

![]() | Elect the Dead by Serj Tankian
Buy new: $28.98 / Used from: $10.00 Although Serj is clearly not as talented musically as his SOAD bandmate Daron, there is still some good songwriting here. His lyrics at times are quite deep (and at other times nonsensical). I picked up the deluxe edition of this album because of the additional artwork as well as the bonus poems by Serj that are included.

![]() | The Awakening by Melissa Etheridge
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.62 This loose concept album pretty much tells the story of her life. I am glad that this album seems to be less overproduced than her previous album, Lucky, however she does seem to still lean toward the mainstream, which works somehow. She's just about the only person I can think of who could write a song assuming it will be played on the radio and make it work.

![]() | Is Is by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Buy new: $5.97 / Used from: $2.49 When it was released, I was very much into the Yeah Yeah Yeah's first album Fever to Tell, but didn't enjoy their 2006 follow up nearly as much. When I heard this ep of songs that sounds more like their older material, I was quite excited. Driving, sexy, and fun, it is more of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs that I loved. Kiss Kiss is my favorite on the ep.

![]() | The Mix-Up by Beastie Boys
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.56 It's true that I never really have been much of a Beastie Boys fan, or a fan of hip hop music in general. However, when I randomly read about this album on popmatters.com, I thought I'd give it a try. It is fun and funky, although not an album I listen to every day. I guess I just wanted something different to listen to that I could put on as background music, for which it works quite well.
