Product Description
Evenflo Secure Step Top of Stair Metal Gate The Evenflo Top of Stair Gate features neutral styling and color enabling it to blend in with most home decors. The Evenflo Secure Step Top of Stair Metal Gate safety is great because of its ease-of-use. It features one-hand operation so parents carrying a child can easily operate the gate. That's a feature often lacking on other Evenflo baby gates. This safety gate is great for high-traffic areas because of the one-hand operation, and also because of its slam-latch close swing door. The baby gate will swing in either direction parents prefer, left or right. It features an infinite width adjustment with the push of a button and requires zero tools. The Evenflo metal gate is mounted with a four-point hardware set which combines with the swing control to provide one of the most secure top of stair gate mountings around.

Customer Reviews
Questionable Design... I returned it.
I bought this gate today, installed it, and ended up returning it after I realized that I was personally uncomfortable with the gate's design from a safety standpoint. Unlike Evenflo's excellent standard stair-top gate, this unit has a new plastic latch mechanism which appeared nifty at first, but seemed insecure when I set it up as per the instructions. The root of the problem in my case appears to be the "childproof knobs" that loosen to allow you to extend and contract the width of the gate. When fully tightened, the gate is supposed to maintain it's width, which is necessary for the new latch system to function. In my case, the fully tightened knobs didn't prevent the gate from accidentally contracting, and after a few open/close swings, the latch started to slip... In short, the gate had become too narrow to "catch" the latch. Considering this is marketed as a "stair top" model, I find this really concerning. I'm not one to call things "junk" or rant and rave, but I do feel it's my duty to advise other consumers against this particular model. Go with the regular wooden Evenflo stair-top gate. It's a much safer design, and will save you a few bucks to boot.
Plastic latch is junk
I bought this product 6 months ago and installed two gates in our house. I had the same problem as previous reviewers, when pulling up on the latch to open the gate, the gate frequently slide along its rails and became smaller so when you go to close it, it no longer latches. You can snug down the knobs but they don't hold long. I could deal with this problem by making sure that when you close the gate everything still lines up. However just recently the latch system failed to open anymore. I took it apart and a small plastic knob broke on the inside and the latch will not open anymore. I'm sure they saved alot of money making the latch out of cheap plastic and the rest of the gate out of metal. It is you the consumer that get screwed when the shortcut catches up to you.
OK so far
So far so good with this gate. I guess they fixed the childproof knobs because the gate works as advertised. The knobs are a little difficult to use at first but once you figure out that to loosen them you squeeze the gates together, they are easier to adjust. If I have problems with this gate in the future I will rewrite my review. It was very easy to install
