Amazon.com Product Description
The HP Pavilion s7600n Slimline desktop PC gives you all the power of a fully loaded home/office desktop in a sleek, silvery gray chassis that's one-third the size of a traditional PC tower, enabling you to place it unobtrusively anywhere--from your office to entertainment center to kitchen. This slimline model is powered by the 2.0 GHz Athlon 64 3500+ processor, which is ready to take on the 64-bit applications of tomorrow. You can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. And thanks to its integrated Wi-Fi capabilities (802.11b/g), you don't need to worry about stringing Ethernet cable from your broadband modem in another room.

It features a large 200 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), Nvidia GeForce 6150LE video card with up to 256 MB of shared memory, multi-format memory card reader, a wide variety of connectivity options (including both USB 2.0 and FireWire), digital audio output for home theater surround sound, and Windows XP Media Center 2005 operating system. This is Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The spacious 200 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 3500+ processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. This 2.0 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MT/s (mega transfers per second) and 512 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.) It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Cool'n'Quiet Technology that conserves power while also keeping the PC nicely quiet.
  • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (PC4200, 2 x 256 MB, 533 MHz) is enough to get you started, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. Unfortunately, due to this PC's compact size, this desktop only expands to 1 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 512 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, this multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R/-R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 40x CD-R, and 32x CD-RW write speeds, as well as 16x DVD-ROM, and 40x CD-ROM read speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Graphics and Sound
Video is powered by an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150LE graphics/video card with up to 256 MB of shared video memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card that's compatible with an 8-speaker surround sound system and a digital audio output for connecting to a home theater receiver.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This desktop has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. For expansion, this Slimline desktop has one PCI slot (occupied), one 5.25-inch external bay (occupied), and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied). It comes with the following external connections:

  • 5 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, and XD Picture Card
  • 1 line-in, 1 line-out, and 1 microphone
  • 1 SPDIF digital audio output
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. You get the enhanced protection you need from aggressive worms, hackers, and other on-line threats with the preinstalled Norton Internet Security 2006 software, which includes a 60-day subscription of live updates. Sonic's DigitalMedia Plus makes it easy and intuitive to back up your pictures, videos, and music onto DVD-R or DVD+R media for safekeeping. Other pre-loaded software includes Microsoft Works, MSN Encarta Standard Online, Quicken New User Edition 2006, Microsoft Money 2006, Muvee autoProducer, Sonic MyDVD Plus, RealPlayer, and Adobe Reader 7.0.

Dimensions and Weight
This desktop measures 9.75 x 4.375 x 13.125 inches (HxWxD) and weighs 14.2 pounds.

Customer Reviews

HP Pavilion Slimline s7600n PC4
I received this item with a dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2GHz "Windsor" CPU instead of the advertised single core 3500+. There was no indication of this on the box or any of the documentation, hence a free "bonus". Your experience may differ, but I was gratified by the unexpected value.

This computer is quite small, strikingly so considering it resembles a full sized personal computer on the inside. The motherboard provides a PCI slot (albeit, a low profile one) and the case accommodates full sized drives. Almost all possibilities for upgrade have already been utilized. There remains one more free RAM slot permitting a recommended upgrade to 1GB. I chose to replace the PCI modem occupying the sole slot with a dedicated graphics card. The onboard nVidia 6150LE GPU is somewhat lacking in performance capabilities, and it steals onboard RAM. The DVD drive provides all currently available mainstream recording functionality, and the 200GB hard drive is connected to the system via SATA. I had some initial concern due to the CPU's cooling solution. The CPU carries a passive heatsink with an 80MM fan slightly above it, mounted to a plastic carrier inside the case. This may have the effect of blowing hot air all over the surface of the motherboard. However, in practice the system does not get very warm at all, probably due to the low-power high-efficiency version of the 90nm Windsor core used.

This system has many integrated functions that consumers expect to find in modern desktop computers. Internal memory card readers, 802.11g wireless adapter, and Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 are all part of the included package. Curiously though, a system billed as a Media Center such as this happens to lack a TV tuner. The documentation suggests adding this as an external device due to the lack of internal space. The 802.11g wireless adapter requires an antenna (provided) be sticky-taped onto the computer externally. The included mouse is of the roller ball variety (as opposed to a more modern optical version). Speakers are not part of the package. All of these are things to be aware of when planning a place for this computer in your home.

Upon first boot-up the user is confronted with many messages and there are several possibly unwanted applications that have been preloaded to the hard disk. Hewlett-Packard does not include an OEM Windows installation CD with this system. This prevents a clean install of the operating system only. The utility software onboard offers the opportunity to create a 3 DVD restore set, however this is only used for a full system restore back to original condition and not for installing Microsoft Windows alone.

This computer is labeled as Windows Vista Capable. After a full re-installation from a prerelease version of Windows Vista, performance on this PC is well above satisfactory. The Vista System Experience index reaches nearly a 5 in every category except for gaming graphics. This computer would be ideal for fulfilling possible uses as a media playback device, personal productivity machine, or Internet browsing workhorse. Its small size lends well to small, confined spaces, although the user should be sure to provide plenty of adequate ventilation. Overall I give this system 4 out of 5 stars due to excellence in its intended purpose despite missing features or items many might consider essential.

perfect for the kids...5
I bought this little desktop for my two boys at Christmastime this past year and have to say I'm entirely impressed with it.

I've long been a fan of HP's computers. They tend to have high-quality construction and give good value for the price. However, this is an unusual unit, thanks to its small size. I used to avoid "funky" or unusual designs, but wanted something relatively sturdy and not too large. With the advent of USB for most peripherals, the use of PCI cards and drive bays becomes much less critical. And the Wi-Fi is integrated on the motherboard here. So I went with this machine.

It was very easy to set up and it has run consistently well. It's played a variety of games, even demanding ones. The video card seems to have plenty of zip and it powers the cheap Acer flatpanel I bought for the boys just fine. I did junk the crummy keyboard and mouse that came with it.

Overall, I can't say anything bad about this machine. So much so that I'm thinking of replacing my long-in-tooth web server with one just like it.

HP S7600N Pavilion Slimline Media Center Desktop PC 5
This PC was purchased to replace and old ACER model. The kids just burnt that one out. The wireless system in the HP is excellent. The kids love it as it as they call it "super fast". I also have and older HP model but, that is no comparison to the slim line HP that we just received. It is great!. THe size is amazing. You can fit a flat screen the PC and keyboard in a very smal area. Overall it is more than what we expected.
