Why I no longer believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and God

The God DelusionThe God Delusion by Richard Dawkins
Buy new: $15.71 / Used from: $3.83
superb analysis by one of the preeminent scientists of our time. Dawkins is widely disliked, because he does not suffer fools (nor illogic nor distorted evidence) gladly. He minces few words, and so some detractors call him 'haughty'. Yet he speaks truth with brutal plainness. Don't blame the messenger; the message may be painful, but his reasoning and knowledge of the issues is masterful.
Letter to a Christian NationLetter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $2.24
granted, this tiny book is way too oversimplified, and covers too few points, to do justice to the entire topic of the irrationality of America's addiction to theistic delusion... BUT on the positive side, remarkably concise and eloquent, easily digestible, and short enough to complete - cover to cover - in a single afternoon's sitting.
God: The Failed Hypothesis: How Science Shows That God Does Not ExistGod: The Failed Hypothesis: How Science Shows That God Does Not Exist by Victor J. Stenger
Buy new: $15.81 / Used from: $9.99
underrated, excellent treatment of many of the logical deficiencies that theists use to support myth-belief
Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural PhenomenonBreaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon by Daniel C. Dennett
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $6.72
A gentler, and perhaps more eloquent exposition of why we seek to believe in myths, and why all such theisms are as unfounded and untenable as any other bizarre delusion that the average Christian would easily recognize as 'false'.
Atheist Universe: The Thinking Person's Answer to Christian FundamentalismAtheist Universe: The Thinking Person's Answer to Christian Fundamentalism by David Mills
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $8.64
One of the more comprehensive yet concise coverages; unlike some of the more detailed and densely philosophical texts I list below, this one is quite readable / accessible to the average person.
The Impossibility of GodThe Impossibility of God
Buy new: $23.36 / Used from: $19.40
Very good tome on the philisophical arguments for and against theism. Might be a bit heavy for those not used to reading tightly reasoned philosophy.
The Non-Existence of GodThe Non-Existence of God by Nicholas Everitt
Buy new: $33.25 / Used from: $18.47
yet another well reasoned philosophical approach. Superb.
The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without DesignThe Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without Design by Richard Dawkins
Buy new: $13.72 / Used from: $5.99
the classic tome debunking the assumptions behind creationist belief (and its newest encarnation, the 'Intelligent Design' fraud). For a briefer, more superficial summary, see his 'River Out of Eden'; another great companion volume is his 'Climbing Mount Improbable'.
Finding Darwin's God: A Scientist's Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution (P.S.)Finding Darwin's God: A Scientist's Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution (P.S.) by Kenneth R. Miller
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $5.75
Ironically, it is a Catholic scientist who has written the best book debunking Intelligent Design and creationism
The Ghost in the Universe: God in Light of Modern ScienceThe Ghost in the Universe: God in Light of Modern Science by Taner Edis
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $10.77
like Victor Stenger's books (one of which I listed above), this is a scientist demonstrating precisely how every puported religious 'experience' or 'reason' or 'foundation' is entirely (and better) accounted for by atheistic/naturalist explanations. Better sense, and one fewer (unnecessary) assumption.
The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the DarkThe Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $3.95
not specific to atheism per se, but the most important treatise ever written on the importance of relying on rational-empiricist epistemology (i.e., science) as opposed to the unreliable deficiencies of mysticism, subjectivism, authoritarianism, and tautologism (i.e., the epistemological foundations of religion). AN ESSENTIAL READ.
How We Believe, 2nd Edition: Science, Skepticism, and the Search for GodHow We Believe, 2nd Edition: Science, Skepticism, and the Search for God by Michael Shermer
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $6.88
one of many excellent books by Shermer (see also his 'Science of Good & Evil' and 'Why People Believe Weird Things')
Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects ChristianityWhy I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity by John W. Loftus
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $10.00
Looks like this will be a revision of content he has already published (which prior books were also excellent, if a bit disorganized), to make it more readable, and to incorporate updated info, based on the author's email to me.
Atheism: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)Atheism: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) by Julian Baggini
Buy new: $10.16 / Used from: $2.34
for those not willing to wade through the heavy content of Michael Martin, George Smith, David Mills, etc, this is a very brief and superficial summary of the key reasons atheism makes better sense.
Value and Virtue in a Godless UniverseValue and Virtue in a Godless Universe by Erik J. Wielenberg
Buy new: $21.59 / Used from: $7.98
easily debunks the commonly held theistic fallacies that without God, there would be neither basis for morality nor meaning to life.
Atheism, Morality, and Meaning (Prometheus Lecture Series)Atheism, Morality, and Meaning (Prometheus Lecture Series) by Michael Martin
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $4.89
similar to the Wielenberg book already cited above
Like Rolling Uphill: Realizing The Honesty Of AtheismLike Rolling Uphill: Realizing The Honesty Of Atheism by Dianna Narciso
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $6.75
a relatively lesser known gem. Also a great introduction to the topic for those not familiar with the superiority of atheistic positions.
Why Darwin Matters: The Case Against Intelligent DesignWhy Darwin Matters: The Case Against Intelligent Design by Michael Shermer
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $3.91
Shermer again. The number of science books that completely and devastatingly refute every last assumption of theist creationism are legion. I may make another list dedicated solely to the top 50 or so books debunking belief in creationism and I.D., but for this list, just a few of the more readable ones.
Darwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of LifeDarwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of Life by Daniel C. Dennett
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $3.41
another eloquent and superbly reasoned treatise by the ever-excellent Dennett
Science and Religion: Are They Compatible?Science and Religion: Are They Compatible?
Buy new: $15.75 / Used from: $2.14
for those who hold the belief that Science and Religion are 'Non-Overlapping Magesteria' or domains of exclusive questions.
Sense and Goodness Without God: A Defense of Metaphysical NaturalismSense and Goodness Without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism by Richard Carrier
Buy new: $22.90 / Used from: $13.00
like Wielenberg and Martin (both listed above)
God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons EverythingGod Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $7.25
This is a great book by an author who just isn't very nice, unfortunately. It might even deserve to be at the very top of this list. Absolutely superb content matter, but the mocking tone will be offensive to many, and they won't be able to see the content for the ridicule. Too bad, because the points he makes are razor-sharp. A little bit of diplomacy could've gone a long way.
God, the Devil, and Darwin: A Critique of Intelligent Design TheoryGod, the Devil, and Darwin: A Critique of Intelligent Design Theory by Niall Shanks
Buy new: $13.45 / Used from: $10.47
Explains why creationism has been proven false by science, and evolution proven as conclusively true as any idea in the history of science.
Unintelligent DesignUnintelligent Design by Mark Perakh

yet another

Authors of the BibleAuthors of the Bible by Fred Glynn
Buy new: $23.66 / Used from: $20.33
SUPERB summary of much of the scholarship into the origins of the old testament texts. If you're not ready to wade through archeological text books or scriptural textual analysis, then this will summarize the important points for you. Great distillation by Fred Glynn.
Who Wrote the Bible?Who Wrote the Bible? by Richard E. Friedman
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $3.98
describes how the Old Testament was largely political nationalist mythmaking and false history, created largely in the 8th and 6th centures BCE, and demonstrating how we know much of the earlier content of the bible (i.e., most of it) has been proven false.
The Bible Unearthed: Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Its Sacred TextsThe Bible Unearthed: Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Its Sacred Texts by Neil Asher Silberman
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.98
Describes how archeology has disproven many of the myths contained in the Old Testament. The exodus/egypt story, andconquest of Canaan by Joshua: all false. Abraham: fake. Much of the stories of David & Solomon, also false.
Who Were the Early Israelites and Where Did They Come From?Who Were the Early Israelites and Where Did They Come From? by William G. Dever
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $10.50
archeology has shed much light on where the ancient Israelites came from (not Egypt in an exodus) and what their form of religion/worship was like (again, not what the Bible claims) and the impossibility of the Abraham legend. In terms of historical truth, most of the old testament prior to Josiah (~600 BC) is simply outright false, or badly altered from reality.
