Brutality Chronic intrigue
Detective Philip "Kane" McKane is a hard nosed cop in Philadelphia who is dealing with a few new things these days besides the common garden variety thugs he has chased down through his career. The dead have come back to life and everyone is trying to cope with that. Add to this little tidbit some bloody rain and two different men who claim they are Jesus Christ and you have a pretty complicated storyline.
That is just part of the premise of this complex story, which has a serial killer that hops from one body to the next, once the one it is in gets wasted, which is somewhat like the Denzel Washington movie "Fallen". The two Jesus's, which take the form of the anglo version (Jesus) and the middle eastern, darker skinned version (Yeshua) seem to be a crash course to face off against each other. Most folks have lined up in favor of the blond haired Jesus, including a corrupt evangelist and many of the Christian religions while other groups believe that Yeshua is the true son of God. Then there are a few folks like Kane, who don't believe in either of them. His instincts are telling him that he will play some part in determining if one or both of them are phonies...along with his efforts to rid the world of the supernatural serial killer that has haunted him nearly his entire life.
This is not your traditional story with a straight line plot that leads you from start to finish. This is my first dip into the Bizarro movement of writing and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this work. I honestly was prepared for some very off the wall stuff based on some of the other works plugged in the back of this book (other author's works have some very interesting subject matter, which I will not delve into here). So when the story actually made sense, despite not being of a more traditional variety, I was happy I read it. I am a fan of zombie fiction and enjoy the different ideas that authors come up with, using the undead in a variety of ways. Andre Duza has come up with an entertaining piece that stands alone amongst the works that I have read. It is unique, brash, outrageous, fun, and definitely entertaining.
Intense ride
This is the first book I've read by Andre Duza and I have to say it was an intense ride. This book is truly a gem. As a huge fan of action flicks and b-movies this is one of the most bizarre and action packed horror books I've read in a long time. The writing has a really cinematic feel to it, with brief scenes that flicker in and really move the story along. The story line is complex and actually really quite epic. This book really has it all, two messiahs both claiming to be the return of Christ, a serial killer who can jump in and out of different bodies, an endearing relationship between a young man and a mentor, blood and gore, sex and violence, all taking place amid the zombie apocalypse. Someone should make this into a movie!
One of the best Horror Novels of 2006
On Easter Sunday in the year 2015 the Apocalypse has begun. The sky is raining blood. The Dead are rising from their graves seeking Human Flesh. A murderous ghost is possessing people and making them do horrendous things, and to top it all off, two men with extraordinary powers have appeared, and they both claim to be the second coming of Jesus Christ. Philip Maken a Detective in Philadelphia wakes up on Easter Sunday to find that the world he knows is falling apart. Zombies are roaming the streets. Social services are breaking down everywhere including in his city. The Government has went into hiding. Jesse James Dallas a corrupt TV Evangelist and one of the men who claim to be Jesus has seized power in the US. Philip doesn't believe Jesus is who he really says he is and he wants to figure out what his agenda is before its too late.
I enjoyed the heck out of Andre's first book Dead B*tch Army so when I started Jesus Freaks I expected great things. Andre didn't disappoint me in the least. Jesus Freaks was one heck of a ride. I was hooked as soon as I started it. I found myself reading the night away. I could not put this book down. It is easily one of the best Horror stories to come out this year. Andre has a fast and aggressive narrative style that I absolutely love. You know when your reading his work.
Jesus Freaks isn't your standard Zombie Story. Andre has written a stylish and aggressive story with a dose of social commentary. I highly recommend this book to all Horror Fans. It has a little bit of everything and it should satisfy all. I cant wait to see what Andre has in store for us next.
