My daughter is proof that this book works!
After a dismal experience with another well-known potty training book, I bought this book. What a difference!
FYI: I decided to extend the potty training to a month instead of two weeks, with each step taking a week. Other than that, I followed the instructions exactly as they were spelled out.
The book is short and easy to read. The author gives her own personal experiences and of her friends. Every step in the potty training process is spelled out in detail. Every step is tested on normal kids (not adults or child geniuses) and actually does work.
At the end of the book, there is a quick reference page and a troubleshooting page (in case your kid has a problem or doesn't want to do something). None of the steps involve harsh discipline, rather they use incentives (like normally forbidden treats) and encouragement.
I've read all the negative reviews and I wondered if any of the reviewers even tried using the method on their children, because none of them mentioned it. I'd recommend at least trying it, instead of poo-pooing it because the author's methods are unconventional and because she isn't a doctor or psychologist.
I think a lot of reviewers said it was inconvenient because it involved a huge amount of time and effort. Well, I can't argue with that. The first week especially stinks (literally), at least for the parent. It involves several rolls of paper towels and endless patience, but after that it isn't too much of a problem. I can see where this would be difficult to follow for working parents. All I can say for them is to take some time off from work (2-4 weeks) to devote to toilet training. You're going to have to deal with it eventually, you might as well get it over with, then go back to work.
Well, in a month my daughter was completely toilet trained. Even though the author mentioned her kids still had accidents, I haven't had a problem with that after that first month. Though the author says to take them to the potty every two hours ad infinitium, I didn't really have to do this after the first month because my daughter knew when she had to go and went roughly every two hours automatically.
All in all, I would highly recommend this toilet training book. My child is stubborn and moves around constantly, so I assumed toilet training was going to be hellish. This book made it much quicker and easier than I expected.
This book is a must for all parents!!
Great guide to potty training. Through all my ten plus years working with children and parenting two of my own I have heard tons of advice. This book got right to the point and made me realize you may have to give up some things to potty train your child! The candy was a great idea. I am usually against food for rewarding, but her comment about forgetting the food pyramid for a few weeks hit me. Big deal, you are giving your child independence that he/she needs that will last a lifetime....a few weeks of candy will not hurt. Also, the advice about parents being ready is so true. Let the laundry and cleaning go it will still be there, but the potty training experience only happens once. I will use potty training as bonding time with the family. This book is such a great price and filled with useful information that is easy to implement. I highly recommend it to anyone!! Thanks so much for making me realize how much fun potty training should be.
Great Resource for New Parents
I was desperate when I finally found this book; I couldn't get my daughter to go; However, after reading this book I had new and improved tools to use. I really liked the useful charts at the end of the book. This book provides parents with a quick read and great new tools. I even thought it was neat that the book provided tips for parents with twins. If you are having trouble with potty training your child, you should read this book!
