Start learning the language, if you can. This is a tonal language and requires extensive training, but try anyway. Native speakers always appreciate an attempt. The seminary students laughed at me, but were absolutely delighted I was trying.

Depending on when you go, you will need this. Even if it is not the rainy season, the humidity will require a waterproof map. When I told my Vietnam veteran friends I was going, they said be prepared to be hot. I said we live in Louisiana. How much hotter could it be? They laughed. Answer: Much much hotter and more humid by a long shot!!!

Since Bangkok has the population of a country, you need a guide to what is there to see. If you have time, this will provide the guide to other places, as well. I am told the beaches are incredible, but they are located in the southern Muslim area and a totally different people and culture.

There are 10 million people in Bangkok. In Thailand, if you want to work, you can. At McDonalds (yes, that McDonalds), there are workers who take your trash to the trash bins. That's their job. Construction workers are divided into three shifts and work around the clock. It is amazing!
