One of my top picks. Well-written and researched. Supports a positive parenting approach and truly helps brain development. Covers all of the important things from attachment, playing, reading, to talking. Written by a professor in a Psychology in Education dept. Her personal story is also touching.

Anonther top pick! A must-have book for every parent! Filled with pictures and highlights, it reads like a really fun and easy (but very informative) textbook. Great research behind the need to respond to your baby's cries (explains why letting babies cry it out is damaging) and great advice for dealing with things like tantrums. Written by a child psychotherapist.

Absolutely wonderful and very psychologically-sound! Helps you understand your baby's feelings, needs, and temperament. Provides great advice to help your baby grow up with a secure attachment. Well-researched and well-organized. It is a must read! Written by 2 psychologists (they also wrote Baby Minds but this book is much more important).

Dunstan Baby Language -- Learn the universal language of newborn babiesDunstan Baby Language -- Learn the universal language of newborn babies
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $22.00
Great dvd when you have a newborn. Helps you understand what your baby might be crying about. My baby would make the "eh" sound when she needed to be burped and the "neh" sound when she was hungry. It definitely worked but only during the first 3 months. Not sure if I agree that all evening crying is due to gas though. I think that's where the "Happiest Baby on the Block" dvd comes in handy.

A must!!! Especially if you have a fussy baby. Jiggling and using water as white noise definitely worked for my baby. You might need to modify the techniques for you baby but they are definitely helpful.
The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the NightThe No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night by Elizabeth Pantley
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $4.06
Informative and a much needed alternative to the harsh method of letting your baby "cry it out."
Why Love Matters: How Affection Shapes a Baby's BrainWhy Love Matters: How Affection Shapes a Baby's Brain by Sue Gerhardt
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $10.45
A fascinating read, especially if you are really interested in psychology and seeing what kind of parenting could potentially lead to certain mental disorders. If you prefer a "how to" book, the other book I recommended, Science of Parenting, might be better though. Written by a psychoanalytic psychotherapist.

The Discipline Book: How to Have a Better-Behaved Child From Birth to Age TenThe Discipline Book: How to Have a Better-Behaved Child From Birth to Age Ten

Great advice on setting limits without inhibiting your curious baby/toddler. Some books by Dr. Sears are a bit redundant but this one is very informative and useful.
The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage Are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy KidsThe Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage Are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy Kids by Madeline Levine
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $7.96
Insightful, fascinating, and relevant! Although it discusses older children more, it is really about different types of parenting. Will definitely help you become a better parent! Especially helpful are the warnings about hovering, solving all of your child's problems, constant praising rather than true warmth, and expecting your child to be a star. Written by a psychologist from Marin County.

Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $5.32
A good resource for the first 2 years. Remember that you can modify some of the attachment parenting suggestions as long as you are responsive to your baby. I also used "What to Expect the First Year" but IGNORED any baby-training or sleep-training advice.

Interesting book. Neat IQ stats/charts. Good parenting advice at end of book. Recommends being very nurturing, responsive, and attentive. Also recommends providing an enriching environment and setting age appropriate limits (not to be confused with baby training).
