Getting Ready for Baby: The Ultimate Organizer for the Mom-to-BeGetting Ready for Baby: The Ultimate Organizer for the Mom-to-Be by Helene Tragos Stelian
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.40
I wish I'd owned this when I first found out I was pregnant. This is the best planner I've found, & I plan to give this as gifts whenever I find out anyone I know is pregnant. I still find it useful as it has a section for the baby-sitter, etc.
Pop Culture: The Sane Man's Guide to the Insane World of New FatherhoodPop Culture: The Sane Man's Guide to the Insane World of New Fatherhood by Christopher Healy
Buy used from: $0.01
My husband bought this during my 2nd trimester. He says that it's a funny easy read with many tips for the new dad to be.
What to Expect the First YearWhat to Expect the First Year by Heidi Murkoff
Buy new: $9.90 / Used from: $5.40
We checked this out from the library b/c a friend said she wanted to give it to us. We believe this is one of the best references you can own. I wouldn't recommend reading it from cover to cover; it doesn't replace a pediatrician; and I do use about.com to look up concerns, but this is still great to have on hand.
The Baby and Child Question and Answer BookThe Baby and Child Question and Answer Book by Carol Cooper
Buy used from: $1.06
This is another library find that would be great to have on hand. The writing is simple and clear. The photos are very helpful.
The Happiest Baby on the Block - The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Baby Sleep Longer (DVD)The Happiest Baby on the Block - The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Baby Sleep Longer (DVD)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $8.32
Ok. This was a gift, and we're REALLY glad we saw it (I wouldn't have believed the techniques if I'd just been told) but be warned it only has 5 techniques of how to help calm a crying baby. If you can rent or borrow it, do that. If you can afford it, buy it and then pass on the knowledge to someone else.
Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive Diapers, Newborn (Up to 10 Lbs), Plus Pack, 136 DiapersPampers Swaddlers Sensitive Diapers, Newborn (Up to 10 Lbs), Plus Pack, 136 Diapers
Buy new: $46.99
Go ahead and get one box of newborn diapers. Our daughter was 9lbs 5oz when born and these fit her better than size 1 for the first 5 weeks. You'll need a LOT of diapers, at least 6 per day. BUT, do not open and fill up your diaper stacker etc (open as you go) just in case you can't use all of the diapers you were given/bought and need to exchange them.
Pampers Sensitive Baby Wipes Refills, 192-Count Packages, Pack of Four (768 wipes)Pampers Sensitive Baby Wipes Refills, 192-Count Packages, Pack of Four (768 wipes)
Buy new: $28.25
For the first couple of weeks, it's better to use warm water and soft paper towels (like Viva brand) instead of wipes. However, we used these as well and didn't have a problem at all with diaper rash. Other off brand (not sensitive skin wipes) tend to make her a little red.
3-Pack of Keep Me Dry Burpcloths by Carters3-Pack of Keep Me Dry Burpcloths by Carters
Buy new: $6.40
These are great for the small spit up a newborn is likely to have, but I also like larger coverage burp cloths to attempt to protect my clothing.
Gerber Flannel Receiving Blankets 5-pk. - GreenGerber Flannel Receiving Blankets 5-pk. - Green
They are WAY too small to use as functional swaddling blankets BUT are great for big burp cloths though they do tend to put little bits of fuzz on her some times. I've also heard that the gerber cloth diapers make great burpcloths as well.
Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece Small, IvoryKiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece Small, Ivory
Buy new: $9.99
I found one of these at the thrift store in remarkable condition for $2, but I would pay the price tag for a new one. This is great if you struggle to keep your baby snug in his/her swaddle at night because the velcro is super strong and there is no excess fabric to contend with. If using the fleece, make sure you don't overheat the baby with clothes that are too thick.
SwaddleDesigns Ultimate Receiving Blanket - Polka Dots - Chocolate BrownSwaddleDesigns Ultimate Receiving Blanket - Polka Dots - Chocolate Brown
Buy new: $21.58
We don't have this exact product, however the BEST receiving blankets are square and large like this one. Check the thrift shops if concerned with the $. I bought a bunch from there, and the best one we have is the kind from the hospital.
Printed Thermal Blanket (2-Ply)Printed Thermal Blanket (2-Ply)
Buy new: $7.99
Again, check the thrift or consignment shops. I found several of these there but I'm not sure of the brand. Again, these are good for swaddling. You're going to need a LOT of these because of diaper accidents and spit up. We were given new Koala brand ones as gifts.
Carters Sweet Baby Blanket, EcruCarters Sweet Baby Blanket, Ecru
Buy new: $14.99
Great gift. We have several super soft blankets, but the one's by Carters haven't shrunk. The big plushy ones we use to cover her car seat when going out into the cold. You'll need at least one nice blanket at the hospital for his/her first photo.
Diaper Dude Diaper Bag, CamouflageDiaper Dude Diaper Bag, Camouflage
Buy new: $54.52
Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Yes, we think so. It has many pockets, a strap that extends over the shoulder to help relieve back strain, and isn't a feminine color so Dad won't feel awkward carrying it. I carry it as well because it is so very convenient. This was a great x-mas gift to my husband.
GumDrop Pacifier Full-Term Vanilla Scent Orange 5 PackGumDrop Pacifier Full-Term Vanilla Scent Orange 5 Pack
Buy new: $11.99
Every baby is different, but these are the only pacifiers that our baby wants. She was given one at the hospital and won't take anything else. They are small, soft and vanilla scented. You won't find them in most stores unless you live in Hawaii or California, so order a few and see if your newborn prefers them, then order more when she does.
JJ Cole Pacifier Pod - Green ModJJ Cole Pacifier Pod - Green Mod
Buy new: $7.75
We have something similar to this and get loads of compliments on it. It makes storing a pacifier on the outside of the diaper bag easy and can hold more than one and a pacifier clip as well.
Velour Pacifier Holder, BlueVelour Pacifier Holder, Blue
Buy new: $1.49
We own something like this. It makes it easier to grab the pacifier b/c it's attached to her clothes or car seat strap. Make sure you get one that fits your pacifier. I have one that loops through and velcros and another that has a snap, but if you use a Soothie or MAM pacifier, you'll need their specific clip.
Medela Harmony Manual Breast PumpMedela Harmony Manual Breast Pump
Buy new: $27.40
This is all the pump I need b/c I'm a stay-at-home Mom w/only one baby. It cleans easily and works great for me. I even have carpal tunnel, and this doesn't bother my wrist when I use it. Check with a lactation consultant if you want an electric. Ours would lend us an electric pump.
Breastmilk Freezer Pack - 80mlBreastmilk Freezer Pack - 80ml
Buy new: $14.50
These are great because they attach right to the Medela pump. Breast milk can be stored in the back of the freezer for up to 3 months.
Medela Breastmilk Feeding and Storage SetMedela Breastmilk Feeding and Storage Set
Buy new: $16.99
We have three 4oz BPA free plastic bottles with slow-flow nipples which is all we've used (along with the storage bottles) these past 6.5 weeks since I'm breast feeding. Obviously, formula fed babies would need more bottles than this. We have other kinds of bottles, but our baby prefers these. They don't leak and again attach right to our pump.
Graco Quattro Tour Travel System with SnugRide, Marlowe 2009Graco Quattro Tour Travel System with SnugRide, Marlowe 2009
Buy new: $234.00
Bulkier than some, smaller than others. I feel safer with her in this car seat than others, and it has the straps in the front for easy tightening. The stroller drives smoothly around our block and turns easily.
Graco SnugGlider Swing holds SnugRide Infant Car SeatGraco SnugGlider Swing holds SnugRide Infant Car Seat
Buy new: $53.97
Found this at a consignment shop for $25. It's good to have for trips and just set up in another room since she likes the swing so much. It keeps us from dragging the big one from room to room.
Graco Lovin' Hug Open Top Swing in BancroftGraco Lovin' Hug Open Top Swing in Bancroft
We were given a hand-me-down of a similar Graco swing by a friend of ours. That swing is probably Sarah's favorite thing ever. We often have to get her to fall asleep in it before laying her in her pack-n-play.
Graco Pack 'n Play Playard with Bassinet & Changer in Bancroft 2008Graco Pack 'n Play Playard with Bassinet & Changer in Bancroft 2008
This stays in our bedroom, and we're glad to have it especially for the changing pad. We were also just given the Pack'n'play lite which we'll likely use more for actual travel. This will be of more use in the long run because it is so much bigger. We'll use this for several months before moving her to her crib.
Graco Travel Lite Crib with Bassinet in BetseyGraco Travel Lite Crib with Bassinet in Betsey
Buy new: $70.00
Just given this to keep in the living room. It is MUCH lighter and smaller than the other pack-n-play and has wheels on one end, so we can roll it from room to room. It also can fit through doors without being folded up, unlike the other one. Very handy to have.
Graco Travel Lite Crib Sheet in CreamGraco Travel Lite Crib Sheet in Cream
Buy new: $7.99
You'll need a couple of these to ensure that your sheet fits your bassinet.
Graco Quilted Pack'N Play Sheet in CreamGraco Quilted Pack'N Play Sheet in Cream
Buy new: $15.99
Nice thick sheet to add padding to the thin "mattress" in the Pack-n-Play Bancroft. Also, get this brand to make sure a proper fit. I have Ecru and Sage. They wash well, don't fray, bleed, or shrink.
Fisher-Price Rainforest BouncerFisher-Price Rainforest Bouncer
Buy new: $45.00
She love's this. I was skeptical of the extra price tag for the gadgets, but if you can afford it, it's worth it.
Prince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes WarmerPrince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes Warmer
Buy new: $19.25
I was given this as a hand-me-down, and it's been a life saver. We keep our house cold, so those wipes are shockingly cold on her little bottom. This keeps them warm, just make sure you follow the directions and rinse and change the pad regularly. I can't compare this to other brands though so check for the best rated one.
The First Years Quick Serve Bottle WarmerThe First Years Quick Serve Bottle Warmer
Buy new: $14.98
Again, we were given this as a hand-me-down and are very glad we got it. My pain meds for the c-section made it hard to wake at night. This made it easier for my husband to quickly heat the medela bottle for Sarah rather than trying to boil water and wait for the bottle to reach body temp.
DaVinci Jenny Lind Baby Changing Table - CherryDaVinci Jenny Lind Baby Changing Table - Cherry
Buy new: $99.00
I bought one at a thrift shop for $25. This helps mommy and daddy more than the baby since we don't have to lean over. Check craigslist, consignment shops, etc. These get sold used a lot. Save your money for diapers, wipes, and sheets/blankets/changing pad covers, you'll need them.
Basic Comfort Contoured Changing Pad by Summer InfantBasic Comfort Contoured Changing Pad by Summer Infant
Buy new: $27.45
We bought this new in a kit at Babies'R'us that included 2 changing pads, a mattress pad cover, and some extra waterproof padding. It was well worth the $70 we paid for the kit. Keep your eye out for coupons once you register at Babies'R'us for such a thing. Otherwise, this would work just fine.
Basic Comfort Ultra Plush Change Pad Cover - SageBasic Comfort Ultra Plush Change Pad Cover - Sage
Buy new: $15.00
2 of something like this was in that kit we bought at babies'r'us. It's really soft which is much nicer to lay her on and keeps her from sticking to that vinyl surface of the changing pad. We layer waterproof changing pads on top and peel them off one at a time to keep from having to wash this multiple times every day.
Disney Baby Mobile- Dreams of HoneyDisney Baby Mobile- Dreams of Honey
Buy new: $27.60
Bought this on eBay with a comforter set, diaper stacker, bumper pad, etc for $30. This has had her attention more than most any other thing we've put in front of her. We attached it to the side of the changing table so it's just over a foot above her head. Not sure if it's this mobile in particular or if any mobile would do.
Bright Starts Pink Pretty in Pink Supreme Play GymBright Starts Pink Pretty in Pink Supreme Play Gym
Buy new: $47.82
This was an excellent gift for Sarah from her grandma. I wasn't sure about it at first because there wasn't that much contrast, but when she's placed on this mat, she is completely engaged. Also, the musical toy plays a variety of little tunes when you pull the strap. It's so cute. Oh, if you have a boy, I'm sure something similar would suffice.
Boppy Nursing Pillow with Slipcover, Lots of DotsBoppy Nursing Pillow with Slipcover, Lots of Dots
Buy new: $34.99
Another hand-me-down from a friend who had two. I'm so lucky to have been given one. My mother bought us 2 other slipcovers which are also good to have. I use this product every day. Besides breastfeeding, you can also use it to prop your baby up.
Sassy Me In The MirrorSassy Me In The Mirror
Buy new: $13.99
Tummy time is essential for your child's development. This is great for that time. It's a safety mirror, so it has no glass and is safe, but be careful when you clean it or you'll take the reflective surface right off. We have this one and the one with the MP3 player but I prefer this one. The other doesn't sound great, so isn't really worth the extra $.
Diaper Genie II Pail SystemDiaper Genie II Pail System
Buy new: $26.09
We were given this at x-mas. Don't buy this used unless it comes with a manual. It takes a little working to figure just how things fit together. Honestly, I'm not sure it's necessary because we haven't hit the big smell as of yet (benefit of breastfeeding). I also use recycled grocery bags in a small trash can which seems to work as well, but my husband prefers this.
