Cats can be difficult to understand. They often seem secretive, aloof, and maddeningly independent. But they also earn deep love and devotion from millions of cat owners who cherish that incomparable feline spirit. For cat lovers everywhere, pet expert Arden Moore explores cat behavior in an inviting, browsable Q&A format. She answers the questions that come up again and again among devoted cat owners, opening an intriguing window on the feline brain and physiology.
How, for example, can a cat in deep sleep three rooms away from the kitchen come zooming in within seconds of the refrigerator door opening? It's not just instinct. Cats really do have amazing hearing. Their ears are perfectly designed to pick up more sound vibrations and at higher frequencies than either humans or even dogs. And what does it mean when a cat's tail swishes slowly from side to side? That cat is probably getting ready to pounce on a mouse—either a toy or the real thing. Tail swishing is part of the cat's predatory positioning.
In addition to explaining why cats do what they do, Moore shows readers how to prevent many common feline problems. Her practical advice and workable solutions help cat owners work with their pets to banish bad litter box habits, nighttime howling, and destructive clawing. Even finicky eaters can become feline gourmands with a little gentle encouragement.
There are hundreds of tiny quirks and kooky habits that make a cat a cat. This sturdy, fun-to-read handbook explains those catticisms and opens every cat lover's eyes to the complexity of feline behavior. To know them is to love them!

This book is the Real Deal on the mysteries of kitty behavior
The number-one cause of death of cats and dogs under the age of three is preventable, behavior-related problems. Arden Moore is on a mission to change this deplorable statistic. With the publication of "The Cat Behavior Answer Book" (and its companion, "The Dog Behavior Answer Book"), Moore gives pet owners the tools and information they need to understand their cherished pets and manage any behavior challenges that arise.
Packed with enlightening answers to real questions from real cat owners about real cat problems, this book reflect Moore's own kitty expertise (she's a longtime cat mom herself) as well as the latest scientific research into the quirks and mysteries of feline behavior. Moore's advice is sound, sensible, practical and always given in a warm, friendly, supportive tone. She's never judgmental and doesn't overcomplicate things.
The compact, welcoming "handbook" format is inviting rather than intimidating, encouraging curious ailurophiles to flip to any page to listen in on Moore's warm, wise and witty advice. There's lots to learn, whether you're a new kitten parent or a veteran cat owner.
Moore deeply empathizes with cats and their humans, and understands the complex relationships they share. She knows that just a bit of help in navigating the rough spots of feline-human life can strengthen the interspecies bond -- and save cats' lives. Get this book, and join Arden Moore on her mission.
One of the Best Cat Behavior Books
I bought this book at the same time as I bought Pam Johnson's "Twisted Whiskers," & although Johnson's book is good, it's not as helpful as this book. The "Cat Behavior Answer Book" gave me a more thorough discussion of issues, & more specific solutions than Johnson's book. One of my cat's issues is night-time meowing, which wakes me up, & Moore's book helped me solve the problem more than Johnson's book did.
Led Astray By These Reviews
This is not the most amazing cat book ever. It is just another cat book. All these super positive reviews made me hope I would find answers that I haven't been able to find in dozens of other cat books, but within seconds, I knew this wasn't the book either. I looked up "spraying" in the index and all I got was Feliway for an answer, which I don't believe really works. It doesn't work on any of my eight cats. And medication, but doesn't say what medication. Just go to the vet. Gee, thanks. Like I couldn't figure that out.
