"How I Eat Without Wheat" is a picture book for toddlers and young children who have diets that restrict them from eating gluten and wheat. The book uses rhyming text and entertaining illustrations to tell the story of a boy who takes a positive approach to his change in diet and restores his health. After my 22 month old son was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2003, I was unable to find any toddler-age book that would help me explain to him that everything was going to be alright. We did not want him to go through life thinking that just because he had a different diet than some children, it did not make him any less "normal." There are plenty of children on special diets for different reasons and I emphasized at home "not to make a big deal." He's now thriving thanks to the new products on the market from increased awareness about celiac disease, gluten intolerance and wheat allergies. A change in diet has changed our lives and I hope to inspire other young children to live happy, healthy lives.

Customer Reviews
What a great book!
I bought this book because my nephew has celiac and I wanted to help my daughter (age 4) understand why her young cousin can't eat the same gluten-based products as her (e.g., Cheerios). The story and illustrations are delightful. She likes me to read it to her at bedtime but I didn't know if she really comprehended the concept of gluten-free until we were making a snack one day and she picked up the Goldfish crackers and said, "Zack can't eat this because it has wheat in it -- do they make these whithout wheat?" I highly recommend this book for young children with celiac and their families.
Great Help for Wheat Challenged Kids!
My son has Celic disease, and this book really helped him laugh at himself. It also helped him understand his life can be normal without wheat. The pictures in this book were really funny and made him laugh.
Wonderful Book!
This book has been great reading for my 7 y.o. daughter who was diagnosed with Celiac last year. She has even shared the book with her friends so they can learn about Celiac too. We hope Karen Fine continues to write inspirational books like this.
