"Cutting, One Run At A Time," is a clever book on learning the mechanics of cutting...teaching cutters to stay focused, to slow down their thinking and to enjoy the run. Success in cutting - or any discipline - isn't guaranteed with the best trainer and a high-priced horse...you can't reach your maximum performance potential until you school your mind...even those who aren't cutting participants can learn from the book's first five chapters. Schulte teaches how to gain total control of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. The end result: You stay calm and focused, make rational, split-second decisions under pressure; and most importantly, have the most fun you've ever had competing. The remaining chapters are dedicated specifically to cutting...Schulte provides easy-to-follow, how-to instruction...diagrams and photos supplement her explanations...Graphic icons used to denote tips and strategies are reader friendly...The book is well worth the read--packed with fresh, motivating information that will help you improve your scores and your enjoyment. -- Jennifer J. Denison, HORSE & RIDER, APRIL 1999

But, of course, there is a unique twist. Schulte's book is packed full of her vast knowledge of how to get - and stay - Mentally Tough. From the Author
My career path with horses has been varied and wonderful. I have followed my many passions as I've woven them into a rather unique combination of riding, showing, teaching, writing, and exploring how to reach peak performance. What excites me most about teaching others is when someone comes to know-not to try to convince themselves-that they really can do whatever it is they desire. I love seeing the light bulb of understanding and knowing come on! You can never replicate an action consistently until you understand the "why" of what you're trying to do! Once you understand, the intent and approach must be to develop confidence and calmness-instead of fear and quick fixes. If you don't, you will never be consistently successful over time. It is my sincere desire that this book become your personal resource guide and that it helps you understand, really understand...so you can build your confidence, focus on the task at hand, and enjoy riding. There is no real destination where you finally arrive and have nowhere else to go. Have fun and learn each time you ride. Enjoy your horse beyond the show arena and all of the wonderful people in our sport. I wish you a lifetime of fun and harmony within yourself and with your horse as you continue to learn. Always, always, believe in yourself.

An All Around Guide to Cutting
Barbara Schulte's point-by-point guide to cutting and competing devotes about half of its content to the mental aspect of the sport. Barbara covers topics such as the importance of goal setting, mental strategies, and the power of positive thinking. In the remaining half, she deals with selecting the right horse, making sure the rider has the basic riding skills down, practicing effectively, and learning how to work the herd. The material is presented in "executive summary" fashion with the outset of each chapter telling the reader what that chapter will say. Within each chapter, Barbara and co-author Julie Wells present information using a lot of numbered lists and headings. No reader should fail to understand the book's important points. At times, however, the elegantly simple presentation may not convey enough detail to be useful. For example, when telling the reader "how to get" a horse to have head/neck flexibility, the book assumes the reader knows what to feel for "when the horse gives his nose in response to your request." (People may incorrectly think a horse "gives" when his nose points in the direction of the direct rein pull but the horse is still bracing on the rein, not softening.)
When Barbara presents information on reading cattle and working the herd, she excels. The reader will appreciate how she breaks down each step of a cut and correlates those steps with what the rider should be doing to effectively ride his or her horse. She could have written the whole book on those topics, and the reader would still want more.
The book's quirky format may annoy some readers. (On the even numbered pages are inspirational quotes from cutters or photos/illustrations; the odd numbered pages contain the text.) But the presentation does make for easy reading. Whether the reader is interested in acquiring performance coaching/positive thinking skills, learning how to cut cattle, or both, Barbara shares enough gems to make this a worthwhile read.
