1938, France French Poetic Realism of the 1930s was probably the greatest influence upon American films of the 1940s. Seeing imitation as the sincerest form of flattery, the French later gave American "Film Noir" its name. This Jean Renoir classic is not film noir, per se, but the one film which literally gave it its blueprint.
