Yankees shortstop Jeter is a genuine role model, and this Sports Stars with Heart series entry is a very respectful, if somewhat distancing, profile. The book covers Jeter's stellar career, beginning in high school (where he played basketball, too), and continuing through his decade with the Yankees and his many honors and awards. But there is little about his personal life, though mention is made of his biracial background ((his parents met in Germany while they were serving in the U.S. Army). Sidebars highlight his place in Yankee--and baseball--history. Jeter's work with his Turn 2 Foundation, which supports scholarships, baseball clinics, physical fitness for young people, and other worthy activities, is stressed. The book is great for kids who are interested in baseball in general, not just in Derek Jeter. It traces the development of a great career of a person who is a wonderful role model for kids.
