Poor Value
[1 star - for some reason I cannot edit this feature]
I originally rated this 3 stars because of its price and basic qualities. I have to say that I regret that decision. I have used 5 of these units since September for my work with teenagers. The most recent time was the last straw. They are cheap, but you get what you pay for. I have had to resort to ten kids using my personal garmin etrex too many times.
-Cold start time is horrible, if it even does it at all.
-Lowrance did not see fit to include a manual on using advanced mode(You must print all 92 pages yourself online).
-I have set waypoints (which is very easy to do on this) and followed them back to find it wished me to go in the complete opposite direction when I was already 1000 feet away.
-The design is NOT intuitive and easy to follow, each page has its own menu with not much corssover for commands.
-The display is fairly clear, but small. Backlighting is real nice though.
Spend the extra money, buy the basic eTrex.
Impressive display with nothing behind it.
The display is very impressive for monochrome LCD. This is the only nice thing I have to say about this GPS. The map shows only state and federal roads. No smaller roads show up.
The accuracy is not as advertised. I punched in a home point, walked several hunred feet and walked back. When I returned to the original spot, it read that I was 50 to 100 feet away (I tried it several times).
My first time using it in the field, it crashed on me. I tried everything. Even the power button did not work. I had to remove the batteries for a few minutes in order to get it to come back to life.
Very disappointed. I have contacted Lowrance by email. We will see how their customer support department is.
Don't know what they are talking about?
I have to tell you. I read the other reviews and am not really sure what they expected for the price. You get so moch more compared to comperably priced units form other brands. I primarily use mine to geocache and will admit the inability to download coordinates from the computer would be nice but I didn't want to spend the money to get a unit that did that. As far as accuraccy I feel that this is very good, I have never had a problem finding my caches and have never had a problem getting a lock within a reasonable amount of time. Backlight is great, base map is adequate, navigation page is good. Basically you can get much, much better but not for this price. Perfect for the weekend geocacher, hiker, biker.
