intense adjustable spotlight . . .
Stanley manufactures several versions of tripod type flashlights. The unique design allows for the flashlight to be hand held like a normal flashlight, or built-in legs can be released to form a tripod that supports the light head. When setup on the tripod, the head is adjustable through a range of about 190 degrees, and can be aimed at a specific target. The 95-146 model has a single LED that produces a very intense, white beam of light. Brightness is stated as 40 lumens, and the LED has a rated life of 100,000 hours, and can operate at two different levels of brightness. The light beam is fairly tight and narrow. Being able to adjust the beam spread would be a very useful feature, unfortunately this is not possible. Instead of being able to evenly light an area, you get a super bright spot, which is less than ideal. Still a flashlight that is stable, and capable of being precisely aimed, is an extremely useful tool.
The tripod legs are hollow aluminum tubes, designed to each accommodate three AA batteries. The flashlight will operate on either three, six or nine batteries, with the light output remaining constant. Rated run times are 30 hours using three batteries, 60 hours using six, and 90 hours using nine cells. Be advised that there is very little tolerance in the diameter of the legs. It is a tight fit, but most normal AA batteries will usually slide in, however rechargeable NiMH AA batteries, which are often slightly larger in diameter, may either be too big to slide in, or get stuck inside the leg. So be careful! The legs fold down around a rubber-like grip to form the handle. When fully loaded with nine batteries, the flashlight can be rather heavy.
The unit appears to be resistant to moisture. Although the head and the legs caps are hard plastic, with rubber bumpers, durability may be open to question. Hopefully the light will not be easily damaged, or break a leg off, if dropped. If the LED fails or breaks, you will be looking at buying a replacement flashlight. If the LED lasts as long as it is supposed to, this could be very economical and useful light. If you are interested in this type of product, Stanley makes them in various sizes and styles, so find the one that best meets your needs.
great product, good idea.
You always need a light when working under the sink or inside the workings of a spa, and this product for a change gives you that. Its better than trying to hold a light in your mouth or propping it up where you need it. This thing goes where you want the light with no help at all. The more batteries you put in it the longer it lasts. The two stage switch for the brightness is also useful. Well thought out product for a good price. Recommend it for any one of many projects. Only had it for 2 months, but used it on two jobs and worked perfectly. Can't say anything about longevity, but its a flashlight, and it works great. I highly recommend it.
OK Flashlight
Pros: It can stand on it's own. Good light output.
Cons: Can't focus/spread the beam. Tripod legs stop holding together after short time.
The ribbed, central rubber grip has indents to hold the three tripod legs, but the indents have almost no mechanical friction -- the legs are spring loaded and held in place by a small magnet at the bottom of the central rubber grip. The design is intended to allow for one-handed opening of the legs -- a small button pushes the magnet away from the legs so that the legs spring open.
Unfortunately, after a day of use, the magnet is no longer able to hold the legs, and they now are continuously slightly apart. Only an annoyance, since even a light grip keeps the legs in place. Not annoying enough to return the flashlight, unless something else goes wrong, but it does take up extra room in the drawer.
All in all the utility of the tripod outweighs the other drawbacks, although a few minor improvements (adding a way to spread the beam, and a fully mechanical solution for the legs instead of the magnet) would make this a great flashlight.
