I Against I4
Bad Brains-I Against I ****1/2

Released in 1986 after the band broke up, then decided that was a mistake and reformed almost instantly, I Against I is the classic album that really shouldn't be a classic. Of all the amazingly wonderfully brilliant albums that Bad Brains had released, this somehow became the most popular.

The band completely changed their sound and style here, and it wouldn't be the last time. Bad Brains opted out for a more (at the time) modern metal sound with funky over tones and rhythm. Now they do this wonderfully but it doesn't feel right, and for anyone who has heard the bands other albums they know what I am talking about.

The intensity is still here (even though they have slowed down the intensity greatly!) on tracks like the brilliant title track, 'I Against I' which is easily among the best songs the band ever recorded, and the equally phenomenal 'House Of Suffering.' The rest of the album is strong but seem awkward and at times forced.

To be honest there is not one single bad track on this album and had it been released by another band (i.e. Living Colour) then I would have given this a five star rating but coming from Bad Brains it doesn't feel like a five star no matter how good it is, it sounds like Dr. Know is Vernon Reid of Living Colour trying to be Bad Brains, an imitation of themselves.

This album to me is the first album I have heard to have the sharp riffs and style of hardcore. The songs still stand out in my mind after not listening to the album for some time and that is my criteria for a great album. Secret 77 has a smooth rhyming tempo on guitars followed with sharp drumming and same goes for sacred love where the drums are very sharp on double beat with heavy guitar playing. The vocals are over the top to echoed smooth to convincing. Overall this album is a must have if you are into any kind of rock to hardcore style of music.

In this day and age when you can get just about any music you want for free off a friend's hard drive or some online site, there are is little that I would say you should pay your money for. This is one of them.

There is no need for me to add to the plenty that has been said and written about this album. It is a classic that needs to be heard - like it or not. It is an album that will inspire! BUY NOW!
