It's a spoon.
Got it. It was indeed a spoon. It worked like a ladle, only smaller. It had a smooth finish. And it was dishwasher safe. What more can you ask for in a spoon?

Nice small ladle
It is somewhat small for black beans or soup, but is the size I wanted. The finish is very smooth and looks good. I really like it, also purchased a pair of serving spoons that match it.
