| al-Qaeda or al-Qaida / al-Qa'ida (Arabic ‘The Base’) An Islamic network of fundamentalist organizations committed to the use of terrorism for the attainment of their goals. It was formed by Osama bin Laden in the late 1980s to unite Sunni Arabs who had fought in Afghanistan against the USSR, and was based in Afghanistan until the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001. Its political agenda is the replacement of ‘heretic’ governments by Islamic governments based on the rule of Sharia (Islamic law)—a notion which includes several Arab regimes (especially Saudi Arabia) as well as the USA, whose influence throughout the Middle East it wishes to eliminate. Bin Laden has issued three fatwas (religious rulings) calling on Muslims to take up arms against the USA, and a 1998 statement asserted that it was the duty of all Muslims to kill US citizens and their allies. | ||
