Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Kinnell has edited and introduced a representative sampling of Carruth's poetry, including selections from nine separate books, beginning with The Crow and the Heart (1959) and ending with If You Call This Cry a Song (1983). Carruth is a chameleon, adopting a different form on nearly every page, writing sonnets, free verse, syllabic poems, and long dramatic monologues. His diction ranges from jive-talk and four-letter words to terms like "anaphylaxis." Yet there is a marvelous unity to this book because Carruth returns again and again to the places that shaped his life, especially mental institutions and his beloved farm in Vermont. And he is always a master of poetic surprise: "Like a broken telephone a cricket rings." Selected Poetry is a major book that belongs in all poetry collections. Daniel L .
