Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Barely recovered from her valiant efforts in capturing Lucy's killer in The Ghost of Fossil Glen, 11-year-old Allie finds herself wrestling with another ghost this one strangely connected with the school's treacherous cafeteria lady in The Ghost and Mrs. Hobbs by Cynthia DeFelice.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-This story picks up a few weeks after the events in The Ghost of Fossil Glen (Farrar, 1998), in which Allie solved a murder with the assistance of a ghost. It seems that this sixth grader is becoming a ghost magnet. This time, the ghost is a handsome young man, John Walker, who enlists Allie's help, and it is only much later that she learns that he is seeking revenge instead of justice. With her supernatural association comes a string of unfortunate occurrences wherever Allie goes in her efforts to gather background information: spontaneous fires start in the school and the public library, and false alarms are tripped at the fire house. The fire chief sustains a serious fall as he tries to provide Allie with some town history. The protagonist becomes overly sensitive and jealous of her best friend, Dub, and has to patch up the relationship. Even her weekend of dog-sitting is a failure because her ghost alienates the normally lovable canine. There's more than enough suspense in this well-told story, and Allie is a strong, likable, believable character. A page-turner.

From Booklist
Gr. 4-6. Eleven-year-old Allie Nichols dealt with an apparition in The Ghost of Fossil Glen (1998). In this book, a second one comes her way and she begins to understand that she is a "ghost magnet" whose job is to help spirits make peace with their lives--or get revenge. The ghost this time is sensitive John Walker, who died in a fire, which he suggests was set by Mrs. Hobbs, the scary crone who runs the cafeteria. Each student has to interview someone for Elders' Day, and Allie is directed to talk to Mrs. Hobbs. Perhaps she will get to the bottom of the mystery. Or perhaps she will get involved in a terrifying adventure that finds her trusting the wrong people and endangering both herself and her little brother. There are a couple of missteps. A discussion of Elders' Day finds Allie and her classmates knee-deep in stereotypes (a deaf man who misunderstands questions and shouts out mistaken answers). And why is Mrs. Hobbs, who's identified as an elder, suddenly 41, especially when she looks twice that old on the cover? Still, this has real kid appeal. It's scary, but safe, and the relationship between Allie and her best friend, Dub, helps keep one foot in the real world. Be on the lookout for more books about Allie and wispy beings trailing behind her. Ilene Cooper

The Ghost and Mrs. Hobbs Review3
The Ghost and Mrs. Hobbs is a very appealing book. It's a sequel to the book, The Ghost of Fossil Glen. This book is about a girl named Allie. She faced her first ghost at Fossil Glen, a spirit of a murdered eleven-year-old girl named Lucy Stiles. Now, another ghost has entered Allie's life. The ghost tells and forces Allie in the direction of Mrs. Hobbs, the daunting cafeteria lady. Allie thinks Mrs. Hobbs has something to do with the death of this ghost. Her life suddenly becomes complex, and random, mystifying fires breaking out wherever she goes. Allie's best friend is mad at her, and both are jealous of each other. Same thing with her little brother, Mike, and he keeps thinking Allie is lying about Mrs. Hobbs being harmless. He thinks otherwise.
I have various thoughts on this book. I personally thought this book was okay. I mean, it wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. So, it was somewhat in the middle. But, I liked it. I recommend this book if you love a good mystery, or a page turner. This book is also full of suspense. Even if it might seem confusing, it gets easier and easier towards the end. That is what I think of the book, The Ghost and Mrs. Hobbs.

The Ghost and Mrs.Hobbs5
The Ghost and Mrs.Hobbs is a great story for people of all ages. It kept me in suspense right up to the last chapter! I could'nt wait to finish and see how the story turned out! I chose to listen to this book on audio for my english class because I thought that it would be short and I would'nt have to listen to it for that long, I never thought that I would actually like the book, but I did! If I could I would write another paper for it! I really think that you should read this book because I know you'll enjoy it!

You Can Hear Anyone but You Can't Always See Them5
After reading The Ghost and Mrs. Hobbs by Cynthia DeFelice, I felt the connection between me and the character, Allie. She is one of those girls that like to have new experiences in her life even if she knows that it's a dangerous risk to take.
She decides to interview Mrs. Hobbs, the lunch lady, to discover the mystery of her ghost John Walker. She comes through a lot of fires every where she turns, but Will he make her little brother risk her life? Or will she let everything rest? These are all questions Allie's house holds.
The author Cynthia DeFelice is very informative and the way she writes is so descriptively!
"Am I like a magnet ghost?" Is one of DeFelice sayings? This book makes me jolt when I read it because it gets better and better! So if your one of those persons that loves reading freaky and outrageous stories the check it out!
