Product Description

Jo Beth Sidden trains bloodhounds for a living and occasionally takes on a tracking assignment such as hunting down a sweet old lady who has wandered off into the Okefenokee Swamp. Unfortunately, wily prison escapee Jimmy Joe Lane has decided that he and Jo Beth are the perfect match, and his adoring kinfolk support their good ole boy's delusions.

Suddenly Jo Beth has serious man-trouble, on top of a series of bizarre deaths that are further complicating her life. But when Jimmy Joe threatens her favorite hound, Jo Beth really sees red. Before he harms one hair on her canine friend, she swears she'll bring the crazed criminal to justice—along with his whole twisted family if necessary. Or else she'll die trying!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Fans who have been howling for another chance to cheer for Jo Beth Sidden and her kennel of bloodhounds, who haven't followed a trail since Ten Little Bloodhounds (1999), can rejoice. Not only is the feisty heroine from Balsa City, Ga., back for her sixth outing, but her love life gets a real work out. After a six-week fling, Jo Beth and Sheriff Hank Cribbs decide that their hot but volatile relationship is too costly to continue. Besides, a handsome hunk's in town on a sad occasion and Jo Beth thinks she may be of some help. And then there's Jimmy Joe Lane, a swamp rat and inveterate prison escapee who's developed a crush on Jo Beth. His many kin regard Jimmy Joe, who's managed to parlay an original 90-day sentence into a debt of more than 40 years, as something of a legend. When Jimmy Joe makes his nearly inevitable next jailbreak, he can't wait to begin turning his fantasies about Jo Beth into reality. Lanier mines the situation's comic possibilities nicely without straying into farce and, as usual, turns an expert eye on bloodhounds and their care and training in this warmly entertaining concoction. FYI: The series' debut title, Death in Bloodhound Red (1995), won the Anthony Award and copped nominations for Agatha and Macavity awards as well.

From Booklist
Dog trainer Jo Beth Sidden and her assistant, Jasmine, offer dog-tracking services to the local authorities in small-town Balsa City, Georgia. In Lanier's sixth bloodhound adventure, an older woman with dementia wanders off into the Okefenokee Swamp, and Jo Beth and Jasmine take two canine companions on a perilous mission to find her. Meanwhile, Jo Beth is stalked by an escaped convict named Jimmy Joe, and she tries to decide how she feels about handsome sheriff Hank Cribbs. Gracious, kind Jo Beth is an eminently likable heroine, as is African American beauty Jasmine. Jimmy Joe and his eccentric "kin" are characters right out of The Beverly Hillbillies--over the top but completely entertaining. And, of course, as anyone who saw Best in Show knows, bloodhounds are irresistible. The perfect story to read while sitting in a porch rocker drinking sweet tea. Jenny McLarin

A Bloodhound to Die For5
Having read all the previous books in this series, I was anxious to read this final book. I enjoyed it immensely and was glad that many of the loose ends were tied up. This final novel was somewhat different than the earlier five. Perhaps it was because Ms. Lanier was aware of her failing health and finished the series for fear that she wouldn't be around to give us further adventures of these colorful characters. I am heartbroken that we will hear no more from this talented writer. I highly recommend this book and all the others in the Bloodhound series.

A Bloodhound To Die For5
I just completed A Bloodhound To Die For. I had told myself that when this book arrived, I would "pace" myself, and savor each word, as I have been told that this is Ms. Virginia's last book, but once I started on page one, I didn't put it down until I had finished it! As usual, Ms. Virginia does not disappoint with this book. I had tears running down my face at the end - partly from the story, and partly because this could very well be the last of the series. My hope is that Ms. Virginia will change her mind, and give us just one more! I have felt like Jo Beth is a member of the family since the first book, and I hate to see it end! Virginia Lanier is the BEST!!!!!

The last of a great series5
JoBeth's bloodhound training and breeding business is profitable and busy these days and she is finally free of her abusive ex, but her personal life gets confusing when an inmate of the state prison decides that he is in love with her and is escaping to marry her! It would make a little more sense if she had ever met the man before she visits the prison, but he's fallen in love with her press releases. When she rebuffs him, he threatens Bobby Lee, her favorite hound. Add to this a confusing personal life for both herself and her friends and a murder suicide at the local high school and JoBeth's bloodhounds have alot to sort out.

I have always loved this series and have waited a long time for this one. Since it is the last, I almost hated to get it. I read it in one sitting and it is as good as the others. I guess I'll just have to start from the beginning again.
